    Computer Naming Scheme

Good Morning fellow BG Forum lurkers.

As part of my job i have to write/update computer documentation for my company and sister companies network(s) and I'm working on a new Computer naming scheme.
Frankly, i am having a hard time coming up with a naming scheme that works and is semi original. Something thats rather easy for me to remember and with a few pages of documentation would be easy for other people to follow.
i am trying to decide if i should go with
    Personsfirstnamewhowasassignedtocomputer-datecomputerwasbought
    or
possibly something along the side of characters from tv shows/movies
major characters from Battletech for instance
i've also tossed around the idea of names from my former FFXI linkshell.
the only issue i have is that if i go with something like the later two it wont be as easy to follow as say the first one. The first one is ok but it just isnt original enough and Fun.

anyway, I'm open for suggestions if anyone wants to suggest a naming scheme they use themselves or their company uses and i would love to hear what people are using for their laptop/desktop/mp3splayer/whatever at their homes/work.

All suggestions will be taken into consideration but i've already been vetod on anything remotely resembling porn, porn stars, porn industry or various parts of anatomy.
Apparently my company frowns on me using various slang terms for the Vagoo and Schlong (it was only a joke at the time but the President didn't get the humor).

    thank you in advance

    -Justice

P.S - i apologize for my poor spelling and grammar. I blame public schooling

My school uses Pokemon for the names of their webservers, and our CS dept has 3 computers: Mary-Kate, Ashley, and Monica.

I was going to recomen class names (warrior paladin etc) but I think I really prefer senoska's idea

At two of the jobs I worked at, we did it differently.

At my first job I simply named them after the owners name. ie: JSmith, and we had an excel file that had more detailed info: John Smith - room# - - phone# - JSmith - computer model - warrenty info - etc

    Very detailed and easy followed.

At the job I work at now, it's basiclly a training center that anyone in the world can rent out and visit, we just had some bloks from london come over. Because we are a training-ish center, we have a lot of computer that arnt used all the time and are used by different people and only for a day or a few at a time.

So what I did is name the rooms after states and then name the computers in order. So for example: the Ohio room, and we have 20 computers in that room, so in order I would name the 'main/instructer' computer OH00 and then the rest of the comps OH01~OH20. Pretty simple.

I named mine simple to locate like...

    room117a1
    room117b1 b2 b3

    columns and rows...

so if I had a problem with any comps in any rooms... I could locate teh room + computer and what row/column was giving problems or having them etc etc to repair

I'm from the "Screw originality, go with what works" train of thought.

At my previous company where we only had two sites I used the following:

Domain stays the same as it's a rendition of our company name.

    Site A: domain-a
    Site B: domain-b

    Box Names: a-prod01, a-acct01, a-prjman-m
    Box Names: b-prod01, b-acct01, b-prjman-m

With my new company we have multiple sites and follow the same scheme and it works very well. We've got a database to track each site and has all the information you would normally have. Computer name, room, user/s, etc. We've yet to bump into anytype of confusion since it's stupid proof.

    *Edit-
These are just examples...DUH! Remember that A/B were representing physical sites, in my case actual cities, so A/B were replaced with whatever city the boxes were in.

Where I work, regular computers are named after their 3 character long city abbreviation, 3 character long department name, a dash, and then their company inventory tag.

Server names are after towns in Texas (generally small ones), since we're based in Texas.

So stuff like DALIT-T012345 for Information Technology in Dallas. It makes it easy if you know what department a person is in and can guide them on getting a tag number off the front of their PC case. Saves a lot of work and I can do stuff from my desk. Of course, all stuff is a part of AD.

Depends on who is going to be looking at the network and why.

Are you going to have users navigating to find shared files or printers? If so, it'd make sense to stick to a naming convention that would be logical. As people mentioned, locations, purposes, that sort of thing.
It also keeps things generic for users. No quibbling over what they *want* their computer name to be, it's set and descriptive.

From a security standpoint, you may not want to put information that's too personal in the actual computer name. Also good for keeping things consistent, since you wouldn't want to have to change network resources because Bobs_Comp is now Toms_Comp or something.

Ideally, you should use names that won't require someone to cross reference a database to figure out what and where a machine is. To me that rules out using things like game references, especially if you're talking about a naming convention that other people will have to follow as well.

I was taught to go with funcionality rather than originality, the idea is anyone who knows what they are doing should be able to maintenance your network without having to consult a directory to find out just where and what "Gandolf" is.

At home I use a mix of both sides I guess. All my PCs are named Lambda01, Lambda02, etc. Any laptops that I own will be named LambdaMobile01, etc. My main wireless router is Lambda Base, and my wireless network is named Black Mesa ;D
