My brother has been bugging me to find him a new router (old one is shit), and I don't know a damn thing about them. So, what is a good, inexpensive router?

He uses it for xbox online a lot, if that changes anything.

Buffalo Tech is good, 24/7 US-based support
Belkin is allright, have one that's worked in my parents house for a long long time.

Avoid Hawking Tech like the plague.

Linksys, D-Link, Westell, Etc are all somewhere inbetween.


oh, Netopia or Cisco are the 'best', but most of their stuff is outside of the "personal router" price range.

you can get a cheep Linksys from like wall mart it gets the job done i had one that worked forever

We're still using an old Linksys 802.11b from like 3-4 years ago, and it's great. =D

Linksys is the one that turned to shit, so I think I'll go with Buffalo Tech.

aren't there some new routers on the market nowadays with ridiculously high mbps transfer rates? something like 500+?

beats the crap out of my lowly 56 mbps...

Would simply switching to one of those routers increase internet connection speed?

What other factors would be involved?

I won't make a new topic since this is about routers anyway, but I use a linksys, and it seems whenever I use it, My comp will Dc everything instantly at random hours throughout the day, usually in interevals of about 15 hours or so. Everything turns off completley (Messengers, ffxi, vent) and then comes back on 3 seconds later.

I know its the router, so either A) It's busted, or B) there is something in the settings I can stop it with.

Anyone know?

bar that, try using the router via a cable. if you have a spare wi-fi card, try using that.

If it dc's still with a new wi-fi card or cable... get a router

I'd recommend if you know how to get a buffalo router and then do a firmware overwrite to dd-wrt. http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php

Friend recommended it to me and we've done some crazy stuff to it. I've overpowered my wireless broadcast power to 5x the current FCC standard. I get a reception anywhere in my townhouse at 5 bar strength. Before I was barely getting 2 bars in my kitchen which is below the room with the router.

never tried dd-writ but the idea of being able to over clock my wireless signal intrigues me. will have to give it a shot.

As far as routers go
Linksys is backed by Cisco so its worth it.
Belkin is shit, stay away from them
Never tried Buffalo Tech but i have heard mostly positive things about them.

Same here, it worked great when we first got it, then after like a month or two it started to slow down or stop the connection at all. and coulnt have any messengers running. Epical said he's had a 802.11g for years? I wanna know if i can fix the settings or w/e to make it work.

As my experience with the linksys router, I had suspected that it's the router's firewall problems that it tried to block the p2p related program. Before I change to motorola/D-link, the time I disconnect I found that my pc not able to ping the router. After we turn off all our p2p program, it's working fine.

so, if you experience same problem, throw that router away

Thing is I've only had it for about 5 or 6 months now at that, I think maybe its like resetting my IP or something idk about because its kinda retarded if it crapped out this early.

Doesn't supprise me, think I had a 4-port linksys router about 2 years ago that crapped out after 6 months. Keep it simple... use hubs w/ multiple IP addresses.

It you blow it up, make sure to reflash the original firmware before you RMA it.
