This was originally posted on the gamefaqs FFXI board a few months ago. The question asked was, Do you need to have killed fafnir/nidhogg to be considered a credible endgame player? While the general response was that you don't have to, a few people who haven't said that killing one of them is one of their ultimate ambitions in FFXI. I think you do personally. It's not the difficulty of the fight, it's the exclusivity of it. On each server only a very small number of linkshells have the capability or ability of even claiming it. It's the numbers game - a lot of players can do stuff like sky, sea and dynamis, which are respectable achievements but only a select few, aka the big boys, the elite, camp faf/nid. That they are still seen as a big deal (Faf is always on the highlights of the BG frontpage update for example) four years after being introduced to the game is another thing that convinces me.
I welcome your opinions on this, the legends' especially.
