Help Me out with a Wireless Dilema

    Ok here's the deal:

I need to know if it's possible to run a wireless router as an access point in my house.

Ie. I have the main router for the house in the basement. I would much rather run an access point off of another router in my bedroom, instead of paying $600+ for 7 different wireless receivers.

I called Best Buy and they said it's possible, but they (router) each need to be configured with a different IP Address. Not exactly how to go about doing that.

Anyone able to help me on this one??

    Thanks in advance

main router in the basement wired to the misc wireless access points / wireless routers works and not much to setup if you have everything cabled properly (the router in the basement to the routers in the room would be crossover cables).

The routers in the rooms would obtain a IP address from the routers in the basement and pass along traffic from your wireless card

Only thing you'll have to worry about is setting up security and how often your laptop will roam.

I think I was a little confusing with my OP, or maybe you confused me a little lol.

The main wireless router is Wired in the basement (this on the cable company hooked up). What I was wondering is if I put another wireless router in my bedroom, will it be able to recieve the wireless signal. If that works I can wire my XBOX360, PS2, PS3, and Laptop to the "Recieving Router".

I do not want to run any ethernet wires through the wall at all.

not sure about that... as typically its a one way street thing, you cant have a wireless adapter sending and receiving from 2 diff networks, though there maybe be an AP mode in your router config that would just act as an AP, forwarding your other wireless network

Re: Help Me out with a Wireless Dilema

It is 100% possible, I do it in my room. My desktop and 360 are wired into the router in my room, and my wireless router and that connects to the wireless router in my basement. What you want is for the router in your room to be in "Client Mode", that is different for each router on how it is done. But you do need to give the router in your room a static Ip, otherwise, it just uses the default which will most likely conflict with the one in your basement.

Here are the steps for giving it a static ip.
    1. there will be 4 things to fill in
    2. First is the ip address, just make that something like 10.0.0.1
    3. next is the subnet mask, 255.255.255.0
    4. next is default gateway, this is obtained from your router in the basement. Just use the computer you used to get here, go to run, type in cmd, and then type ipconfig and hit enter, and your gateway will be listed there
    5. the local dns i just left blank
    6. next you need to find the wireless network name (SSID), and type it in where it is asking for it, that has to be typed exactly correct, capitals and all (don't want to know how long this messed me up for). You can obtain this by just going over the wireless connection in the bottom right of your computer and get the name from there.

Just a warning, if you forward ports, it gets more tricky with the 2 router setup.

If you have any questions just ask, and I will try and help you set something like this up.

If your main router is wired only, it has no way of communicating with the wireless router you want to put in your room without some kind of wire. You might be able to use like, powerline adapters to pass an ethernet connection through wall outlets into your wireless router thats in your room, but that's not always an option, they don't always work.

Re: Help Me out with a Wireless Dilema

My main router is a wireless router, all of the laptops connect to that one wirelessly. Then I use my wireless router in my room to connect to the one in the basement. The only thing the main one is wired to is the modem.
