    Compatibility

I need to upgrade my video card, but I don't know anything about anything.

Is there something I need to check on my computer so I know a certain kind of card that I need to get?

    Re: Compatibility

what kind of slot it uses, AGP, PCI-E, etc. Look at pictures online of what its supposed to look like. i.e. motherboard that says it has one or the other and look at a pic of the motherboard. Thats just for compatibility, for performance you gonna have to read reviews or just ask people for recommendations.

    Re: Compatibility

How old is your computer and what type of processor/speed? (this can be found by right clicking on my computer and selecting properties)

What brand (if applicable) is it? ex: Dell Dimension E521, HP pavillion 6550n etc.

    Re: Compatibility

Need to know whether your motherboard takes an AGP or PCI-E card, and how powerful your power supply is. To find out what your motherboard takes, get a program (free) like CPU-Z and have it scan for your motherboard model. From there we can see what you need.

Or, if you bought your PC from a retailer, state the manufacturer and model of your computer so we can pull up the specs.

    Re: Compatibility

Hit the Windows Icon Key, and the Pause/Break key at the same time. Post the info that comes up.

Right click on My Computer and select "Manage". On the left hand side click on "Device Manager" and then on the right side find "Display adapters" and post what it says there.

    Intel(R)
    Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.26 GHz
2.27 Ghz, 256 MB of RAM

The only thing I know about the Brand is that it's a Dell.

    Re: Compatibility

There's a decent chance that your system doesn't even have an AGP card slot. You'd have to use a PCI card.

What model Dell do you have? (It's on the case on the front badge, around the power button, or on the product key sticker on the side/back)

Fuck, I'm actually going to help Krye.

Dowload Belarc Advisor, run it and paste us the report it generates. We need to know your exact motherboard so we can tell you which grfx card to buy.

According to Dell, that machine supports 4x AGP, so buy something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102410

I plan on it very very soon. I can't get a job until I turn 18 in March because my grades are shit. So I'm going to buy a cheap video card and have this machine hold me over until then.

By the way, thanks for helping me out Shue. I respect the fact that you can look past our differences.

And until March 21st, I will have exactly $0. It's like a 2% chance I'll even be able to get the $50 for the video card from my parents.

I still think you're a stupid little kid, but Tech isn't the place for it.
