    Quick Tattoo question

I'm gonna be getting my first tattoo tomorrow and I was curious if it was customary to tip the artist, and if so, what percentage?

I tip the same way I tip a waitress. If they doo a great job they get a bigger tip. If they suck they get a slap upside the face.

Last tat i paid for was like $200 and I tipped $50 cause i thought it was great work and he slid me into an early time slo so i didnt have to wait 2 weeks. Now I just have friends who tat and we barter work.

20 is pretty standard unless it's tiny or OMGWTGHUEG enough to take multiple sessions.

I tipped 40 on my hips since they were a 3 hour piece I did all in one sitting, and has more detail than I could possibly explain

If it's your first, this will seem strange. You will bond, and return to their art.

Tip well. And when I say well, I mean FUCKING well. My latest ink cost me 400 and I tipped 150 bucks.

Tip 40-50%. Your artist makes little on the house fee. They work on tips and you're asking that person to uniquely change your body with their personal style. Tip them well. You'll have a good bond and they'll listen closer when you go for round 2.....and you will.

A tip: Bring music. I dont care if it's an Ipod or a CD they'll play for you while you get the art. It makes a huge difference. Listen to whatever music inspires you as a person, and if you can, music that inspired the piece. It will make you feel intimate with the artist and piece. Close your eyes and feel the vibration, the burning, the sudden sting followed by almost-good-feeling sensations. That's a feeling only a few will ever understand and you're going to be part of that society.

    Welcome to your new addiction.

    Re: Quick Tattoo question

When I got my first done I had no clue and didn't tip the guy. When I went back to get more added onto it I gave the dude $200, and apologized for not tipping him the first time.

I tipped just under %50 for what I paid. I think I paid around $500 total. I'm still getting more added as well but slowly lol.

Also, don't fucking hold your breath. The tattoo guy should tell you this, but if not just don't do it anyways. My brother went w/o me to a different artist and passed out b/c he held his breath for the first couple lines because he didn't know what to expect.

Once the part of your body goes numb it feels friggin great.

Here's what I have done to it now. Not sure what I want on the other side of the face yet:

    Re: Quick Tattoo question

I did end up getting my tattoo on Thursday. He charged me $75; I paid $95. I'm super happy with it, I think he did great. Here's a picture of it (the bad lighting is because the flash doesn't work on the camera anymore; the bad angle is because I took it myself):

I certainly don't agree with everything Ayn Rand wrote, but I do like the idea of one man standing up against encroaching statism, thus why I got the tattoo.

    Re: Quick Tattoo question

I'm getting my first tattoo tonight hopefully if all works out. 2 nautical stars, one on the front of each shoulder. They estimated the cost to be $125 for both so i figured i'd pay an even $200 if they were good(even sides, straight, symetrical, etc.) I plan on getting white and black but a friend told me white on skin fades really fast? Was thinking maybe red and black as an alternative or dark blue and black.

Color in general fades quickly, if you're going for B&W, generally you leave the white uncolored so that it's implied. If you have your heart set on color, expect to have to do maintenance on the tat, as it will fade over time.

Edit: Oh, and I'm dying to get a greywash shoulder piece, something in the style of Boothe, but it's so expensive >.< I'm more of a piercing person myself, the feeling as the needle slides in is almost sexual (Yeah I'm a little off I guess).

Edit2!: I was fortunate enough to actually have Skip Flotten do both nipples, lebret, and repierce both ears into lower gauges all in one sitting for almost nothing. The man holds the world record for most piercings performed in one sitting, and he actually loves putting holes in people.
