Glaciologist Ted Scambos of the University of Colorado was monitoring satellite images of the Wilkins Ice Shelf and spotted a huge iceberg measuring 25 miles by 1.5 miles (41 kilometers by 2.5 kilometers - about 10 times the area of Manhattan) that appeared to have broken away from the shelf.

Scambos alerted colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) that it looked like the entire ice shelf - about 6,180 square miles (16,000 square kilometers - about the size of Northern Ireland)- was at risk of collapsing.

No. Glaciers are formed by constant freezing/thawing of snow which is compacted as more snow falls on top of it.

Any ice that forms from freezing would be much much thinner and would crack and/or melt when subjected to seasonal temperature changes.

You're an idiot, though I suppose it's not your fault. Global warming is a misnomer but it's really easy to trumpet whether it's the media or an idiot activist.

Our climate conditions are going to oscillate between extremes more than it has the past 30 years as a direct result of our influence on the environment. It's not just an overall warming pattern but a movement away from the relatively stable T we had been blessed with.

Just wait till the summer though. It's going to challenge for one of the hottest ever recorded, if not break all records out right.
