Microphone problem with games

I just bought a new microphone after my last one broke, and i have it plugged into the front panel analog connection on my pc. It works fine in the hardware test and using programs like sound recorder, however in steam / TF2 when i go to use the mic it picks up whatever is in my headset instead of what im saying into it. I've tried searching google for this problem and the only thing related was putting a command into the TF2 console (something force_mic somethingorother) and it didn't work. I have the same issue in steam as i do in TF2. Also get the same issue in BF2142. Anyone have a related issue or know of a solution?

1) Make sure in the recording controls that other stuff is muted besides the mic, like in the picture- http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3936/mictl7.jpg

2) Some sound cards have a Select box instead of mute box, in which case make sure the Mic is Selected and nothing else is.

3) Check in here http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/5655/mic2jj7.jpg and make sure in this tab and the tab to the right that the Input is selected for the mic stuff. You can click on the volume button and it should bring up the first picture I posted, in which 1 or 2 should be true.

TF2 and somewhere in steam may have mic options too? I've never used steam or played tf2 so idk if that's the case, if it is you should just be able to follow the same guidelines above to make it pick up the right source, which is what the problem seems to be.

Thanks much, muting the line volume and stereo mix on the recording controls fixed my problem.
