The Lotus Eater and Porcelain Heart.
Listening now.
Porcelain Heart wasn't bad. Good song, but I just didn't get into it really.
...but Lotus Eater, holy fuck. I like. I like a lot.
:nikkei:
Listening to Lotus Eater now, holy shit.
It was good for the first 5 seconds......Serious question, how do you listen to the type of music where it's all yelling and loudsy noise?
How do you listen to your type of music? ACQUIRED TASTES.
I'm not listening to any of this until the actual album comes out.![]()
I don't understand how that is a serious question when it all comes down to personal taste. For me, this music calms me down and I hear the instrumentals, tempo and not just 'noise' as you put it, while music like ska pisses me off more than any music probably could.
Thanks for the headsup, I'm listening to it riiiight now, and it sounds amazing so far. His voice is perfection. :nikkei:
This is the correct response.Originally Posted by Kiro

Still not into the crazy blast beat ridden death metal stuff, with the exception of passages of Between the Buried and Me songs, I guess. That's different, though.
Thanks for the links ^^ much appreciated!
..Listening now and... I wish for once, they'd write something BAD so I could believe that they are human! Man, they own all.
Meeh, I'd like to listen to it right now, damn office computers w/o stereo...
As for myself I listen to this kind of music because it has a instrumental perfection.
That's why I don't understand how you can listen to house and this stuff all the time, everything's done with the computer, it's not very demanding (right word?)

The amount of production that goes into some of this stuff is absolutely unreal.

I'm loving both songs.
Porcelain Heart has kind of A Fair Judgement vibe to it, but better.
The Lotus Eater is unlike anything Opeth has ever done though. Fucking incredible.
Fred and Axenrot really helped add a new level of depth to Opeth.
An interview with Mike said that Fred was totally different to Mike's guitar playing style, and his technicality really makes Opeth sound that much better. Peter and Mike had similar guitar soloing styles, but now with Fred we can hear both bluesy solos from Mike and highly technical solos from Fred.
edit:It's not yelling lol.Originally Posted by gt_killa

Loudsy? Wtf is that lol.
The music sounds best when played loud. It's heavy, that's how it is supposed to sound.
Like Kiro said, it's called acquired taste and the level of musicianship from each member in Opeth is second to no other metal act. They do what they do great, and no one does it better.
I have listened to each song a few times now. As someone who is a huge Opeth fan, I am a little surprised by the direction of the new songs.
I don't think they can really be compared to anything else to be honest, especially "The Lotus Eater". It still needs to sink in, but I'm loving the "Funk/Blues death metal" feel around the 6 minute mark. Seriously awesome.
I actually liked "Porcelain Heart" the better of the two songs initially. It does have a huge "70's rock" feel to it though, especially the section near the end.
It could just be me, but Opeth has set the bar so high for themselves with their previous albums. This causes me to be more critical of them than other bands because I have very high expectations for their music. I guess I was expecting to be "blown away" like the first time I heard "Bleak" or "Deliverance". It didn't happen.
I think I may shelf these songs and wait for the whole album to be released. The songs just kind of gave me more of an "album" feel with their vibe, as in they would be appreciated more when listened to concurrently with the rest of the album instead of just the stand-alone songs like we have now.
"Obzen" by Meshuggah is still the best album of the year for me. I was expecting mediocrity (like Catch 33) and the album just blew me away, especially "Pineal Gland Optics". The album single-handedly changed my perspective of Meshuggah. It will be a tough to beat.

Also for the people who think electronic music is "boring", expand your horizons! No need to generalize... if you look hard enough, you'll find something decent in pretty much any genre.
Here's one of my all-time favorite electronic songs (which you may or may not like)

After hearing Lotus Eater, Opeth's appearance on the Progressive Nation tour made much more sense.
I'm so stoked!
The Lotus Eater's fusion interlude reminds me alot of something Between the Buried and Me would do.
Thanks for the links!
<3 opeth![]()
These songs remind me a lot of their old stuff in the crispness. A lot of their newer work was a bit more blurred and actually as much as I listened to it, it really wasn't the quality Opeth that I prefer. This new stuff, however, really goes back to Orchid I find, and I'm suuuuper excited to hear the rest and head to their concert in May :love
I also have to agree with the comment about how they set the bar really high, but I think where they went with this, they exceeded my expectations. And I loveee the blues/jazz influences in their music.
