Firefox 3.1 (currently in Beta)

Beta 1 has just been released. Its currently being promoted to developers, but there are some nice features included in this release.

* Web standards improvements in the Gecko layout engine
* Added support for CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 properties
* A new tab-switching shortcut that shows previews of the tab you're switching to
* Improved control over the Smart Location Bar using special characters to restrict your search
* Support for new web technologies such as the and elements, the W3C Geolocation API, JavaScript query selectors, web worker threads, SVG transforms and offline applications.
* TraceMonkey. To enable it, you have to set the javascript.options.jit.content variable in about:config to true, and restart the browser.
* HTML5 video and audio elements in Ogg Theora and Ogg Vorbis formats

I tried Minefield last month, a trunk build of the next gen firefox. It was so ridiculously fast with its enhanced tracemonkey javascript engine that it raised my expectation for the next major firefox release. Though it was unstable being a trunk build that it is, (it won't load wallstreet journal and a couple sites at all), so try it at your own peril.

Yeah, the awesome bar is a piece of shit, and the devs are being seriously gay about it...

"We like it, we're getting positive feedback from people who don't understand web browsers, so we're not going to give you advanced folk who are used to how browsers have worked FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS any way to change it back. Code an addon yourselves if you want it so bad."

At first I was against it, but now I like it. Just typing a word brings up matches in your history, but agreed that it needs a toggle not a force.
