    29fps everywhere?

I've been reading around on this section of forums and thread is focus'd on those who claim to have 29.9fps everywhere including AH and aery. Should a:

    8600GTS
    2gig mem
    2.4 c2d
    xp 32

be running 29 everywhere? I've never been able to accomplish 29fps in whitegate or dynamis or anywhere highly populated. In game stats:

Char models shown set to lowest
    Shadows off
    Weather on
    Drawdistance set 5
    footsteps
    12sound soundeffects
    MIP mapping enabled
    Texture/Onscreen maps both uncompressed
    Enable'd bump mapping/smooth texture
    800x600 overlay in window
    1600x1200 background
    1440x900 LCD monitor.

My new PC has recently been running at 29.4 FPS in all areas except Whitegate AH with all settings maxed out except for shadows which were off completely. Drawdistance set to 10. (29.4 FPS and not 29.9 dunno why but that's the max that 3.41 Windower FPS counter displays for me, but I'm not complaining)

At Whitegate AH I get a steady 25 FPS with those settings. Shadows seem to be the biggest denter of FPS. With normal shadows at AH I was getting about 20 FPS and with full shadows down to 10. So I decided to switch them off in the end. Even in a busy DA I get steady 29.4. Only zone I seen that dips FPS yet is Sanctuary of Zitah due to all the dense forestry. That dips to about 25-26.

Yet to try a Dynamis though or a Besieged. That will be the main test.

I believe that FFXI is very processor intensive due to the way it's programmed. But someone else more PC savvy than me could be able to explain exactly why, so I won't even try.

Yeah, no other reason why other than it's programming...I hate it personally how it is CPU driven...but can't do much about it.

People tend to exaggerate their results... quite a bit. 30 FPS everywhere is impossible to achieve at this point in time.

You cant get a constant 29.9FPS everywhere but with a radeon4850, [email protected] c2duo and 2GB of RAM ive never seen my fps dip below 20fps in whitegate AH or in dynamis.

That 8600GTS will still give you the 12fps and lower in crowded areas. Get a radeon4850 instead.

I've got a question about boosting performance as well.

    I've got:

    c2q q9450
    4gb ram
vista 64-bit (I assume this is the problem)
    nvidia geforce 9800 gx2

Most areas i'll get 29.4 fps, but anything with more than 3 NPCs or PCs and my framerate goes to crap (I'd say 14 to 16 fps). latest drivers and all.

    Any tips?

EDIT: okay i exaggerated a bit, I get like 14-16 fps in stuff like campaign.

But what are your settings in game? Like I said before the biggest hit that FPS takes in FFXI is with the shadows. Do you have them switched on? Even with a system like yours you won't get 30 FPS with shadows on high.

As for Campaign I've read before that it's something to do with the way those zones are programmed. Everyone takes dips in campaign battles at some point. But if the game remains playable I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like Campaign matters as much as a linkshell Dynamis run where performance is key

I've got everything on high. 2048x2048 with a 1280x1024 overlay. MIP is set to 3 or 4, bump mapping is off. I'll try lowering the shadows, thanks.
