Going to Weddings Alone?

Is it normal or odd to go to a wedding alone?

Friend of mine at work is getting married, I don't have anyone to go with. Lots of co-workers are going (and are all dating or married) and I want to go, but it feels a little awkward knowing I'm going to be there alone while everyone else I know isn't. So just wondering if there's really anything wrong with going alone or do people actually expect you to go with someone?

Both of the above... Great chance to ask somebody you have an interest in, just as a social occassion cause you really want to invite somebody your comfortable w/. Also a great opportunity to meet emotional people who wish it were them up there, but are still single lol

one of the best in fact. Surrounded by couples, married people, seeing someone get married, lots of booze without it being pushed on her.... yeah, always go to a wedding alone if you can lol.

I would only go alone if it's an open bar affair. Cash bar + going stag to a wedding - Alcohol-induced fun = {No thanks.}

Although, since you're with co-workers there will be people to chat with, especially during the few hours the wedding party leaves to have their photos and such taken before the reception supper. Just hope that one of the bridesmaids is single (and hopefully good looking, heh).

And regarding the asking someone out to a wedding, think of it as an essentially free date. But do make sure to check with whomever is organizing the wedding before you ask someone along, especially if your invitation did not specify "...and guest." Last thing you want is to get there with a date and have no place for her to sit at the reception.

You don't need a date to go to a wedding, it's not like you're going to be doing anything couple related. In fact if you're single the bride or whoever is organizing the wedding will probably consider that and make sure there are other singles at your reception table or something so that you aren't odd man out. There is nothing odd about sitting with a couple during the wedding.

I think it's all about self confidence; I've gone stag to a few weddings and it is a great place to meet women. Most of them are getting wet at the thought of a wedding ring anyway.

Ive gone alone to 2 of my coworkers weddings and receptions. During the wedding it doesnt really matter, but kinda sucks at the reception since youll be the only one :E Girls rarely go to weddings alone, so thats out of the question.

Well I plan to respond by the RSVP date. I figure so long as I do that, the planners can organize tables well enough to compensate for me coming alone if needed.

I don't see how it can be a "free date" because I feel like anyone I would ask would be looking at my invitation as something more than just a social occasion. That might be a separate problem though...

Anyway, I planned to go regardless, but like I said, I felt awkward going if just getting an invitation would have implied I had to go with someone. I haven't been to many weddings so didn't know if it was acceptable to go solo, but it sounds thus far like it shouldn't be a problem.
