Error Message when trying to start FFXI.

I just got my new PC and I get "The program has stopped working" and "A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly" when I try to start the game. I'm on a 64 bit version of Vista so I'm not sure if I need to install the 32 bit version. All the FFXI expansions and POL Viewer install fine, I just can't seem to start the program. I'm on Vista Home Premium SP1.

Have you tried running as admin? Right click icon > Run as administrator.

Re: Error Message when trying to start FFXI.

I actually just bought a new PC with 64bit Vista as well and it tells me everytime i try to start POL or FFXI: The program stopped working. Then it creates and error report. I am now uninstalling to re-install by exploring the discs and running the setup.exe to see if this fixes the problem. I guess the question I have is, can you run FFXI on the 64bit Vista because it seems as though this game just isn't compatible with this windows version?

I tried running as admin as one of the first things I tried. I'm not using windower either. I've tried un-installing and re-installing as well. This just really sucks cause I got a pretty nice PC and I want to play!

Well i got POL to run by downloading the Vista Version from the www.playonline.com. I also installed FFXI with the discs I have but I cannot test if it's going to work until the 4 hour update is done ><. I know some people in my old Linkshell had some trouble with Vista too and they ran a XP SP2 mode within Vista.... but I have no idea how to do that so if anybody has any input please inform me because as far as i'm concerned... Vista sucks...

Re: Error Message when trying to start FFXI.

Ok, so I got it working but in order to do so I had to:

    1. Download the Vista Version POL from http://www.playonline.com
    2. Disable UAC
    3. Disable Windows Firewall(I turn it back on when not playing)
    4. Disable Windows Defender and it works.

If not doing one of those things I couldn't get it to stay stable. Meaning it would crash rather often. A friend of mine in game just upgraded to the 32Bit Vista and all he had to do was download the Vista POL viewer and do the FFXI update and it worked right away so I am thinking it has to do with the Vista Version I am runnning. I don't know though. I hope that helps.

Hate to bump this, but I recently bought a new computer and I'm having the exact same issues as mentioned on here, though Bakum's methods to get it working aren't working for me. I'd "upgrade" to XP if I needed to, but I'd like to avoid doing so on the basis that I know that I'm going to have to get used to Vista eventually.
