Well some creative manipulation of advanced search did not seem to yield what I was looking for so here goes:

I have a main character (WAR, DRK, RNG, BRD) and a secondary character given to me by a friend (PLD only with SJ NIN or WAR). The secondary char's PLD is pretty solid (Valor Surcoat, Homam, Fort. Torque, etc.) and I am fairly competent at dual-boxing. I remember reading a post about the feasibility of an Excal PLD hypothetically probably being able to solo Simurgh, regardless I would like to try to duo it.

My thoughts were BRD/WHM (for erase) on main with Dagger, and PLD/WAR on second with Joyeuse. Songs I'd think would be Victory / BII. I also have Mordant Rime and Evisceration on the BRD.

This may be a retarded query, but I think I've fought Simurgh twice in like five years.

It's maybe doable, but you'd be better off on PLD/RDM(enspells will stick, phalanx is going to make damage utterly negligigble) or PLD/BLU(cocoon serves the same purpose as defender without hurting your offense.. even if your blu is only 10ish). Use defense food, both offensive songs, and sushi on the BRD. Damage taken will not be an issue, killing before rage likely will.

Edit: You can reset rage without letting it unclaim, however it's a bit tricky and if you mess up timing rage will remain or it may go unclaimed.
Step 1: Ensure hate is on PLD, if BRD has been meleeing they may be close/at hate cap. This is the easiest thing to mess up.
Step 2: Lullaby Simurgh, /assist it to ensure hate is still on PLD. The BRD will have the last action, and as such, the claim.
Step 3: Zone out on PLD, this will entirely reset their hate if it was facing them. Zone back as fast as possible, relullabying if necessary.
Step 4: Zone out on BRD, this will deaggro the mob entirely. It's name will be red for a few seconds, as usual.
Step 5: Reclaim on PLD with shield bash or something instant as soon as it returns to 'idle' stance(it's name should still be red at this point), zone back on BRD, continue fighting.

A good THF + BRD with the THF as the only DD can kill in roughly 10~12 minutes, so you should be fine if the BRD is DDing also. Simurgh is evasive; eat sushi.

As for damage, Simurgh doesn't hit that hard (~120 a hit vs my THF)... highest damage you're gonna see during Mighty Strikes (Invincible it) and Giga Scream (~450), but other than that it's very predictable.

I think you'd have a chance if your DD gear is good enough... /dnc melee are reallly good healers on that fight, I found, if you can round up some of those.

Nin and BRD can't duo sim in < 20min so with that I'm going to have to say that PLD using defensive food over sushi and a brd meleeing with dagger won't cut it either. Unless you do that whack unrage method.

NIN and BRD could probably duo it if the NIN has pretty good gear and mainhands blau dolch.

PLD/RDM has joyeuse, enspells, A+ skill, piercing bonus, and doesn't need to spend time casting shadows. With sim's horrible attack, defense food pushes his damage low enough that phalanx more or less negates it. I'm not saying they can, but PLD has much more damage potential on it than NIN does.

No. I used blau/perdu, I have 8/8 dagger and katana, 24% haste setup using shinobi ring, everything but gjall for march tiers on my brd mule, and still did not come close enough that adding a vbelt or dusk+1 would make the difference. It took roughly 30 minutes each kill(and I was 1/24 on boots), no amount of luck with crits or anything like that will make the difference.

Really? Wow O_o, Did the BRD melee?

Yes, using joyeuse and sushi. I'm not sure if this was the ideal brd melee setup, but it's still not going to make THE difference and depending on TP they will have to either bring mp drinks or stop to rest(for me it was the latter). Simurgh hits rather hard on a NIN with berserk up, and has substandard delay, even with elegy/hojo hits will get through fairly frequently(especially after horde) and giga scream hurts if it's used with 1 shadow up.

point being you can't duo sim without a thf. he's really hard to duo period. trio would be much easier.

Resetting rage is annoying but not all that hard. PLD can definitely do more damage than ninja can by a long shot on it, it could very well be doable >_>
