planning to restart... lost on where to read/catch up

lately i've been having an irresistable urge to revive my old character and play ffxi again. as soon as they reopen the return to vanadiel campaign, i plan to get back ingame.

i played early this year on a new character, but the only things i did was level blm/whm/rdm to early 40's before i had to quit. like way back, when i had my old character... ffxi was kinda underplayed compared to now. i think that was when pld/nin was just picking up, there was no all this CE/VE stuff and everyone just pumped as much gear as they could and do their stuff. when did ffxi get so mathematical?!

sometimes when i read threads i get so fucking confused lol, there's everyone talking about hotspots (ele skill/int magic numbers for example, wtf are these? all we did was add as much matk/int we could into gear back then. and oh yeah, since when did we fucking use sorcerer's ring? lol), and then there's so many new content from campaign to einherjar and nyzul... i have no idea wtf im suppost to do when i restart.

also, i see hacking has become a big issue... is it not safe to visit info sites anymore? mysterytour and somepage was the shit when i still played. i do check bgwiki every now and then when someone mentions a mob i'm not familiar with, but thats about it.

so like... to summarize, i do read info and have tried to keep up with the new stuff, but since so much stuff have been released i don't even know where to start. if someone's bored and has a lot of time on their hands, general tips for getting back on track would be appreciated.
