    Torn between 3 games

I realize they're all unique in their own way, but I'm torn between Fallout 3, L4D and GoW2. I'm getting one as a gift, figure I'll buy the other one, just dont know which. I'm thinking I'll ask for Fallout 3 and get L4D on my own. I never played the original GoW, so I'm probably missing out on a lot there but F3 really appeals to me and LD4 looks awesome and really intrigues me.

Imo Fallout 3 unless you really want multiplayer, in which case get L4D. Then again some people managed to put 20 hours into the L4D demo and I was bored after 2, so it's really a matter of preference.

I second Fallout 3... because while you are WAITING for the other 1-2 games to show up (however they are getting to you) Fallout 3 will take tonnnns of time up. You could play it until Fallout 4 comes out if you like =)

Ok, maybe not. You could easily play it for a good long time, and many times at that. The others have decent playthrough and replay value but i don't think either can really compare to Fallout 3.

I agree with Kia and Grae(beat me to it )completely, if your looking for a good RPG and to get your money's worth fallout 3 for sure, I didnt like L4D, but thats just me, but fallout 3 is an amazing and fun game.

Also like Grae said Fallout 3 is really long, I have over 190 hrs on one playthrough and im not even close to completing it, mostly cause I explore everything.

if your looking for a good RPG
Fallout 3 hardly fits in the RPG genre. Its sandbox style might be able fulfill the same role though.

Fallout 3 has the larger amount of offline content by far, but has no online content what so ever. Left 4 Dead is almost entirely online based. Gears of War's main appeal is also online.

Fallout 3 is a very large game, but I should warn you at the lack of quality within main questline and the very small amount of detailed characters outside of the main questline. There are almost no continuous questlines outside the main one, and none go over two(including unnamed tasks). This basically means you won't see a character or community grow beyond one step. Companions have very little interaction in the world and have nothing like character development or quests. The main appeal of the game is the exploration. There dozens and dozens of landmarks to be discovered. While scavenging through these landmarks pretty much become repetitive by the time you find them all(especially subways), there is a certain charm to them. Millage may vary. I am hearing playtimes over over 80 hours, but I was able to beat the game twice and explore everything/do every quest in one of those playthroughs and only clocked in around 50 or 60 hours.

If you are going to get Fallout 3, I would suggest for the PC. Same with Left 4 Dead actually.

I haven't played enough Left 4 Dead or Gears of War II to make much of a comment. Gears of War II plays a lot of like Gears of War. Left 4 Dead is very co-op based and thus best enjoyed with capable people.

    Fallout 3 > Gears 2 > L4D.

Gears 2's Horde mode can (somewhat) fill the shoes of L4D's multiplayer, so I'd definitely go with that first.

Isn't Horde mode just fighting off waves and waves of opponents? That's not like Left 4 dead at all. You are forgetting something important called the Director.

I would get fallout3 I just rented it a few hours ago and I'm in love with it. Gow2 was okay but you could probably get a used copy in a few months cheap. I haven't heard much on L4d but it looks alright.

You act like there aren't a TON of people having issues with the PC version.
A quick google search will show tons and tons of people are having issues with the game, it's not just my computer, lol.

Most crashes are because of a sound codec issue. I also faced it(and didn't bother to fix it, since crashing once every 20 hours wasn't a big deal to me). It wasn't until your post that it sounded really weird. Bethesda are hardly good when it comes to stability so I am not going to give them the benefit of the doubt or anything, but the most common problem is easily fixed.

And if you must get it for the Xbox360 or PS3 then do so. PC is going to have free DLC, mods, and you already get a lot of fun things to do with the game's console such as continue playing after beating the game(oh yeah, the game ends after the main quest) or fighting giant scorpions as a giant in mock Power Ranger battles. In general it is usually a bad idea to get a game based on open-world and a lot of content on a console over a PC. I am kicking myself for doing this with GTAIV even though I knew there would be a PC version eventually.

Alright, thanks for all the replies. Think I'm going to get Fallout 3, play the L4D demo first and see how I like it, and from there pick up GoW2 or L4D. PC isn't an option for me unfortunately, since a) I have a Mac and b) I'm not at a point where I want to drop a grand on a nice rig since I'm still in college for the next year and a half and could get more value out of a laptop's portability until I settle down somewhere.

Just a side note, I've never played Oblivion either, but that's cause it didn't appeal to me that much and I'd played Morrowind before and wasn't terribly impressed with it. I watched a friend play Fallout 3 for a couple hours and it looked really, really fantastic so I figured if I'd give any of the Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout line of games a try it might as well be Fallout 3 - I enjoy guns more than I enjoy swords and magic.

I hated Oblivion, lots of content but the gameplay was awful and the copypaste dungeons sickened me. Fallout 3 combat is actually fun, and whilst there's still alot of the same problems like different dialogue paths leading to exactly the same thing and a few areas seeming exactly the same (subways ffffff) the improvements are huge, damn near every Oblivion dungeon was just exactly the same as every other one with with different directions. Fallout seems to have way more unique buildings. Honestly, comparing them outside of the engine they use is just silly.

Edit: fk, meant Fallout seems to have more unique buildings, not Oblivion!

Good to know, then. Thanks a bunch, you've been a huge help (and everyone else).

FYI, unless you had already downloaded the Left 4 Dead demo last week, it is no longer available. They took it down the day that the game was released.

Also, i didn't hate Oblivion. I actually played quite a bit of it as it was the first game i got with my 360. Only real reason i stopped is because FFXI finally came out for 360 and I had waited for ever to get off of the PS2. I will definitely say that Fallout 3 is MUCH more fun to me though.

It really depends on what type of games you into. I would personally go with L4D or GoW2 because I found myself very bored with Fallout 3 after about 20 hours of play. I just had no will to play anymore and the main quest wasn't good enough to me to even really follow that past a certain point. I could definitely see why people like it, but I found myself having a similar feeling with it as I did with Oblivion, it just couldn't hook me. I always feel like I'm missing something with those types of games, so if you aren't really into open world rpg type games that's something to take into account.
