    Loud PSU humming noise.

Whenever i start up my computer my PSU makes this really loud ass humming noise and it scares the hell out of me so i shut down immediately.

    8600 GTS gfx
    xp 32
    2gb ram
    2.4 c2d

I'm not sure about the exact specs of the PSU but it's set to 115V on the back. Pretty sure it's a 450w PSU.

Anyway when I shut down and restart after the loud humming noise sometimes it continues, other times it doesn't do anymore. I figured it was just being a tard. However today was the first time I got a message about it. Something about nvidia said that they detected my video card wasn't getting sufficient power and has lowered its shit.

prolly should get a new 1

also could be vibration along the case so idk maybe try running it outside the case not pluged into any of the PC stuff and see if it stops or maybe tighten the screws a little befor trying that see if it helps

thats all i can think of ofhand

Yeah.. that sounds like the PSU's ball bearings might be fucked.. Best to get a new unit. As far as brand reco's, I'll say PC Power & Cooling, Silverstone, or Corsair.

And just to be on the safe side, try out a 500W one. Your GPU might be pulling load if you do heavy gaming/gfx shit, which is what might have worn down your PSU before its time.

Is it an internal component other than the fan that sounds like its making the noise? Or is just the fan. Because most fans on my cheaper PSU's that I have laying around usually die or act sluggish after long times of use.

If its just the fan replace it, at least thats what I do when it occurs. Just take caution when one of those bad boys are open or you can get a nice jolt off one of the caps/rail.

    Goodluck.

I'm not sure what it is, but i thought ti was my hdd for the longest time. I've never noticed any really sluggish performance lately but it's just bothersome. Is there a possibility of it frying any of my crap? It's so random when it happens. Can go 1-5 restarts no prob and then out of nowhere loud ass noise that scares me and makes me think i broke it. I guess I should get a new PSU though anyway. I'd like to try a 550w over my current 450.

Personally if you are completely unsure, I would not use the unit/PC until the specific problem gets replaced. In this case if you are sure its coming from the PSU. Then replace it by all means.

Sometimes, and I mean sometimes in my case. When you hear that noise coming from a CPU. It can be dried grease bearings in the fan which cause it to not spin properly due to friction from extended use/heat. Which in that situation you can replace the fan.

But yeah, gogo replacement asap just incase.
