    Swapmagic and a PS2 v7

I'm trying to run backup PSX discs on my v7 PS2. I have Swapmagic 3.6, the slidetool, and PSXLAUNCHER.ELF on a flashdrive: which I just found out only works with v9s and up! I can't seem to find any information on an alternate method for running PSX discs. I'm looking for a way that would be the least expensive, and would require the fewest new materials to obtain. Thanks so much in advance!

First result on google for "Run ps1 backups using swapmagic":

Magic Swap does not support PS1 games, in order to play PS1 backups on a Sensor modded Slimline, you need the following items:

    1. A PS1 game
    2. A PS1 backup

When you insert the retail PS1 game (does not matter what game), the PS1 logo will appear, make sure you keep the lid open throughout this entire procedure, right after the logo appears, the disc will slow down for a split second, when this happens. you need to quickly swap the PS1 backup with the PS1 retail and close the lid. The PS1 Slimline will think that the lid is still closed, therefore it thinks that it is still booting a retail PS1 game. This allows you to play any PS1 backup, even imported backups.

Unfortunately that doesn't help me at all and I'd assume it's the same for the OP.

I used to have this exact same problem. There is a way to play ps1 backups on a slim ps2. What you need is a disc similar to the swap magic called a 'breaker pro'. I got mine from a site called Disco Azul, something like that. It works the same way as the swap magic.

    What about with a fatty?
Any way to play ps1 backups without modifying the hardware in any way?

Or will I have to fuck with the tray?

Echoing charismatic, realize that a v7 PS2 is an older version PS2, one of the original-type fat ones without the flip top, so most of these suggestions are moot, though thanks for replying.

Bumping this with a question: could someone suggest where else to ask this question where someone might know the answer?

The only way you can play PSX backups is with either a modded PSX, through some kind of disk trick (I don't know what it is only heard of it) or I believe a modded PS2

It's very difficult to play PSX backups at all

Well, I have a softmodded (I can load any .ELF files or play PS2 game backups and all of that, my only issue so far is PSX backups) PS2 but I don't want to modify the hardware if possible.

I'm really beginning to wonder if this is possible at all, starting to look like it isn't though .

The Breaker Pro was already mentioned in this thread, and it can supposedly be used on all PS2 models, fatties and slimlines alike.

    Breaker Pro for PS1 and PS2 / ModChipStore.com

The reason you need a disc like this is because of the way the data's burnt on it, including the use of a key that the PS2 is searching for. You can't emulate this by downloading the contents of, say, a Breaker Pro or a SwapMagic disc and burning them to a CD-R yourself, which is why you have to buy the product. (Those of you in need of a fix are probably already aware of this, but for the sake of completion, I figured I'd explain it.)

So, the Breaker Pro should enable you to swap without doing any modding. However, I would research the matter further and see if you can find any compatibility lists online -- I imagine you can -- as I've not personally used this. I've modded my slimline and I use SwapMagic for playing imports, personally.

Bitch don't be hatin', I've got me some strong hands 'cause I know how to do those fuckin' dishes, wash your stanky-ass clothes and handle pots and pans like I'm possessed with the spirit of Julia Child, and that woman could fucking cook, so you best shut the fuck up and respect that I know how to do what I've gotta do in my place, and stop givin' me a hard time about my hands of all things. Mother fucker.

Also, a GameShark Lite can supposedly do the same thing as a Breaker Pro, but I've never used one of them either.

Dang, I should have gotten that.
I bought an AR max to softmod my PS2, I doubt that can do it though :/

I'm just wondering if there's anyway to supplement a Swapmagic somehow to play PSX backups. I already bought the disks, and feel silly buying another disk set, unless it's really the only way. And you're sure the BreakerPro is able to start up PSX backups all on its own? Because I know the Swapmagic requires the PSXLauncher, which is where the compatibility issue with the v7 is coming in.

This page lists system compatibility: Breaker Pro (NTSC) - PlayStation - ConsoleSource.com

I don't have a list for game compatibility, unfortunately.

Have you guys considered a flip top? That works with SwapMagic.

Does the flip top get rid of the need for the PSXLauncher though, or does it just get rid of the need for the slide tool? And the BreakerPro says it can't be shipped to the US?

Thanks so much for the help! Much love!

No worries, and the last link said it won't ship to the US, but the first one I posted about it should.

Also, the flip top should not require anything additional, but you may want to do some deeper research to ensure that. I am pretty sure you only need that and SwapMagic, as that was the route I planned on taking before my old fatty died.

I'd research it and provide some more links but I'm in the middle of an event on FFXI, coincidentally. Sorry.

I used to have a solder-free chip on my old v4 PS2, you could boot PS2 and PSX backups with some kind of swapping trick that involved a gameshark. Honestly found the process too much of a hassle, I just resorted to emulation for PSX games I couldn't score originals of.

Not sure if they made those chips for later models, but the one I had was really easy to install. I think you just had to change a ribbon connector or two around and that was about it. The gameshark thing was a pain in the ass, but I guess it beats using those slider tools that forced the drive open.

Swap Magic Combo | PS2 Flip Top | Swap Magic

Rather sure you don't need anything but the flip top and Swap Magic, and I'd say this pretty much confirms it. Next best thing is to ask around on some forums, but if you get a flip top that works with the v7 and have/buy Swap Magic, you really shouldn't need anything else.
