NASCAR Thread 2009

The Daytona 500 has come and passed, Matt Kenseth started 43rd but still won, there were a few points of discussion about the race. What do people think about Jr.'s "tap" coming up from the double yellow line? How do people feel about the race being called before it was finished. Who is everyone rooting for in the points this year?

I hated the way the Daytona 500 ended. :/ Also, the Dale Jr./Vickers wreck there that cost Kyle Busch a chance at the win was really shitty.

I thought it was pretty hilarious looking at the comments on ESPN's race cast thing as the race went on. When I first started watching, Jr. was around 35th because of a pit violation. Everybody was asking questions like "What are Jr's chances of winning this one?" Later on, he was up to I think 4th place, and the exact same thing happened again lol. It was like he was trying his hardest to stay away from contention for the win

Yeah, and then when he was a lap down due to the violation, he got blocked by Vickers, and caused the wreck. Drama in NASCAR is hilarious though.

I feel bad for Mark Martin though. He had a chance back in 16th place to make a run, yet they called the race due to rain. That's been happening a lot over the last couple seasons in a lot of sports.

I'm sorry, I hate NASCAR, but I can respect people's right to enjoy it. What I can't respect or agree with at all though is that its a sport. Its not a sport. At all.

I always thought it more as a hobby really but one could say it is a sport, for the record, watching a car race around a track 500 times isnt enjoyable to me.

I like to call something a sport when it requires effort to do something, and then you win a trophy while doing it. I mean.. if you don't call NASCAR a sport, can you call hunting a sport? Or fishing and what not? Eh. Eye of the beholder, etc.

I'm not a real fan of nascar...I know enough to get around a conversation because of the popularity it has in my immediate family though. I can't see how it cannot be considered a sport. Even if you don't think the driver him/herself is an athlete, the people of the pit crews certainly are. I'd compare nascar drivers to marathon runners (go figure). Anyone can drive a car, and anyone can run...However, not everyone can drive a car hour hours at 200mph, and not everyone can run for 3+ hours at 5-8 minutes a mile.

Do you honestly believe it takes as much effort to be a nascar driver as it does to be a marathon runner?

As a marathon runner, I think I can safely say yes.

Edit: There are thousands, possiby tens of thousands of people who can run sub three marathons, which would be considered a pretty elite pace. I don't know if I can say that there are tens of thousands of people who can drive 200+ mph in bumper to bumper traffic.
