PC Games where Joypads are essential?

Would you lose interest if a PC game absolutely required a joypad or controller?

I'm not sure what the point is of this thread, but I own a Wireless 360 controller that I use when I play FF11, I have yet to play the game with a keyboard & mouse in the 5 years that I've been playing

I also use my controller in games like Racedriver: GRID, Pure, Colin Mcrae's DiRT (mainly racing games)

FPSs, RTSs.. I use keyboard/mouse. ROMs I use the controller as well

    No, why would I?

I do own a Logitech controller and I am happy with it. Football(sawker, Pro Evo), driving games and console ports(like Jade Empire on Apple Mac OS X) are a lot easier with a joypad.

Also, I use controller when I dual box on Final Fantasy XI so I don't even have to look at the screen to hit a macro.

I'm put off when the Mouse/Keyboard controls are utter shite as with many Console > PC ports but otherwise don't mind.

Curtain shooters are a blast with joypads.

Due to my condition I am restricted to a laptop, so I'm the opposite nowadays, I'm put off if it requires me to use a mouse/keyboard.

But as I don't play much lately and any game I am interested in lately has been: Devil May Cry 4 and Mirror's Edge.

    This when I'm on my laptop. So many flash games require the mouse and keyboard. ;.;
Though I don't have a controller either way, because I'm too lazy to set it up. I'd rather not use it unless I had to.

Ah, I have a PS2 controller with the cable considerably shortened (tied together) and a USB adapter. I play FFXI using that too.

Flash games I don't usually play unless it's of the puzzle kind.

Honestly, anyone that owns a 360 or PS3 can connect their controllers to any PC and it should work fine. And no, for a lot of games, I prefer a controller. Just a few genres make me feel like a mouse and keyboard is better (RTS and FPS specifically).

I'm more of the opinion that games should provide alternate control options no matter what.

There are plenty of games on the PC that are far more enjoyable playing with a controller/joystick/whatever. Ideally, one would have one, but of course, not everyone has one, or has one with them.

I rememeber some of the old DOS games basically required you to have a joystick because when you started the game you did a joystick calibration. No joystick to calibrate, and you weren't getting past that =P

Personally no, I have an Xbox controller for this reason ( I don't even own an Xbox ). I prefer controllers more since I'm not too good with a fast reaction on the keyboard, where I am used to a fast reaction on my controller.

My deeper thoughts on the issue :
Alienating a select group of gamers, for any little reason can cause bad news to spread, for example imagine a few guys hanging out talking about games, "Oh this game looks interesting but I heard you need a controller to play, F it, I'll just get this other one, it looks cool too and I don't have to buy anything else, I only have _______ dollars free".
A more real world example of this was Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles on gamecube. If you wanted to play multiplayer you were forced to have a GBA connected to each person, (so 4 man = 4 GBA). While it's an extreme example since a GBA costed more than a controller, it still alienated a lot of people from trying to multiplay in it, I know a few people including myself who returned the game because I simply didn't want to buy more GBAs to enjoy it - on the other hand people who already had access to multiple GBA enjoyed it.

However if the game is -really- good then yes you'll probably get someone buying it and a controller at the same time through the same word of mouth "You need a controller but it's so worth it".

I'd say leave an option for both there, not as many PC gamers have a controller (as they're expecting most of their games to be PC+Mouse).

Anyone who owns an Xbox and a PC already has a PC usable controller, so you luck out in that department.

Playing Wing Commander without a joystick was considered blasphemy.

I agree with always making some form of alternate control scheme available. I think the most successful games can translate a control scheme across multiple forms of input very well. For example, I like playing L4D on both PC and XB360. Granted I lose a little accuracy on the 360, but the controls are so easy to pick up that it isn't a showstopper.

Question: How would I go about hooking up my wireless 360 controller to my PC?

You need a receiver like this: Xbox.com | Accessories - Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows

I wouldn't want a PC game where a controller is a necessarily superior solution to keyboard/mouse. I just don't go in that direction with my PC games, ever. I'd just as soon buy the 360/PS3 version so save tech headaches for games of that stripe.

It's all about genre. I don't play much outside of MMOs, FPS or RPGs on my desktop system. Having a PC-exclusive game that requires controllers isn't much of an incentive to change that.

I can see needing a joypad for like flight simulator games, but a joypad for a FPS game would be fucking weird.
