Foreign Films

I realized recently I don't actually see many foreign films outside of the American counterparts, and a few 'film buff' friends introduced me to a few really good ones recently and I was wondering how many people here on BG are also film buffs that wouldn't mind sharing a few good titles.

Recently watched [Rec] which is apparently ('shot for shot' to quote my friend) the same thing as the movie Quarantine, it was fun and is allegedly what the witch in L4D is based off of so that made it more fun to watch.

Also recently finished downloading the The Vengeance Trilogy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia recently, I heartell they're remaking 'Old Boy' in America. Old Boy is the only one I've seen so far, and I just want to say it was fan-fucking-tastic, and to be honest I didn't know South Korea even had a film industry to speak of. Would absolutely recommend the Vengeance Trilogy even though I've yet to entirely finish Sympathy for Mr./Mrs. Vengeance I've heard they're supposed to be better than Old Boy, which was super fucking awesome.

Anyway, good titles anyone knows of or ones that should be coming out would be nice. Don't necessarily have to be those artsy types like Diving Bell & The Butterfly and whatnot, just some foreign films.

And by Foreign films do you simply mean films that were made outside of the US or films that never made it to the US at all?

Recent film I watched that I'm not sure weather or not to consider foreign is Paris, je t'aime. God it was great.

• Run Lola, Run - Weird movie, but also cool to watch.
• El Espniazo de el Diablo - Horror flick from the director of Pan's Labyrinth.
• Frontieres - Horror ala Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
• Suspiria - Classico Italian horror from the 70 By Arguento.
• Inferno - Another horror movie by Dario Arguento. He directed a ton, check em out.
• A Tale of Two Sisters- Korean horrorish flick.
• Let the Right One In - A different vampire movie.
• Amores Perros - Mexican one by the same director of 21 grams and Babel.
• Auditon - Japanese horrorish.
• The Returner - Japanese action film in the veins of the Matrix.
• Versus - Japanese action, gun + katanas + shades + trench coat = win.
• City of God - Brazilian.
• Tom Yum Goong Aka Ong Bak - If you don't know about it you need to get slapped.
• The Protector - W/ Tony Yaa (from movie above), cool martial arts.
• Chocolate - Another Thai martial arts. Think Tony Yaa but w/ a girl
• Shaon Li Soccer - Cool kung fu + football.

pretty much either, even though [Rec] is essentially Quarantine I still liked Rec more, just kind of a 'purist' type thing I guess, seems like remakes of books/movies (generally) end up shittier than what they're based on.

Kill Buljo
The most ridiculous Kill Bill parody ever, also mocking Norwegian Sami culture.

I've found torrents of Elling and Kill Buljo, and you can also find Elling at major movie rental places or Netflix, since it was Academy Award nominated that year, so US distributors picked it up. Dead Snow has been playing in a few American theaters, and some film festivals. Uno might be harder to find, though, idk - I brought my DVD with me from Norway, so never looked for a torrent for it. Max Manus just opened in Norway over Christmas.

In addition, there's obviously big international hits like Pan's Labyrinth. Man, that movie bummed me out so hardcore.

My friend is addicted to Japanese horror movies, and although I was not impressed by The Ring or The Grudge, I was scared to goddamn death by the original One Missed Call.

EDIT: Oh, yeah! Run, Lola, Run! was freakin' awesome!!

I know, although I guess I didn't actually put that, the working title for Quarantine was [Rec] at first but I guess it got changed somewhere along the way.

Also, speaking of Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle (same actors and whatnot) is also fantastically hilarious, although somewhat more 'serious' in a sense.

Um, well, it was written, filmed, and acted entirely by Mexican people, and the dialogue is, in fact, in Spanish, so I'd say so.

My favorite foreign films that I've seen (hasn't been a whole lot, but still) are:

Pan's Labyrinth (Mexico)
Downfall (Germany)
Life is Beautiful (Italy)
Let the Right One In (Sweden)
Tsotsi (South Africa)

^Pan's Labyrinth is considered a Mexican film (and therefore foreign), but it was filmed in Spain. Furthermore, most of the actors are Spanish. I didn't list the movie because it's very popular.

I don't ever not list stuff because it's "popular"--frankly I've never understood why people do that; you're trying to be nonconformist or something?--I list stuff because I think it's good.

Basically the Russian equivalent of the Matrix. Opposing sides that have battled for centuries and possess superhuman powers. Worth downloading just for some of the stunning visuals.

Closer ~ One of my favorite films of all time. A tragic romance.

Hero ~ I think everybody has seen this by now so no need to explain.

Paris, je t'iame ~ Little short clips, around five minutes each. All of which are made my a different popular director. Overall it is a love story.
