The video is trash, but buying a new Dreamcast is never a bad idea, unless you don't like good games.

One reason why you won't get any good advice about the Dreamcast from somewhere like Yahoo(or even IGN) is that they are not likely to mention how easy it is to pirate on the Dreamcast. That is one of the main reasons why it remains so popular still. You won't have trouble finding games if you do so.

There anything on the hardware-side that'd be recommended if one were to purchase a Dreamcast?

Tempted to ask for one on my bday, but I don't know what the necessities are.
(is a VMU the same thing as a memory card?)

as far as i can remember the VMU is the same thing, except sometimes there's things that you can download onto it from games

like from powerstone i remember they had a little racing game you could play on it as well as a couple of other little mini-gameish type things

And you can play Chao Adventure 2 with your chaos from sonic adventure and unlock statted seeds!

Also, it would be great if you can find 3rd party controllers. A lot of people find the direction pad on the official controller to be very sharp and uncomfortable(blister forming), so finding a controller with an 8-way D-pad or resessed buttons(closer to the controller's face like a ps2) sometimes helps out

Yeah...the DC produced like 80 million units(or some other large number) and only sold 20~ish of them, so excluding one's simply destroyed by warehouses, there's a huge number of brand-new DCs...more than the market would ever want. If there wasn't, it's value would be a lot higher than it is.

Damn that sweet, a little pricey at $99 but hell you can find every game online so I guess you never have to worry about buying a game if you want.

Still cheaper just to get one used off eBay from a reputable seller. I've seen some on there with 4 controlls + VMU (both of which you can't get in stores these days, meaning more online transactions anyway) and a couple games for the same price as one new on ThinkGeek.
(although the novelty value would be less without having the original packaging and that 'new' feel)
