China's health authorities are reported to be putting a stop to restaurants serving chickens which have been bitten to death by poisonous snakes.

The dish, which is served by a small number of restaurants in Guangdong and Chongqing, is billed as detoxing.

But it has generated a storm of controversy in the media and among bloggers after a video of its preparation was circulated online.

The video shows a cook holding a snake and forcing it to bite a live chicken.

Some voices noted, however, that they found the cooked dish delicious.

Snake's venom loses its toxic effect when mixed with alcohol iirc, which is why they had those venomous snake on shochu/sake bottle.

This is probably just a poor man's fugu. The venom wont be toxic but it would probably give you some sort of sensation when eating it, like numbness.

I'd eat to be completely honest.

It's only toxic if it manages to get into your blood stream, otherwise the acids in your stomach can easily break down the proteins which make up the venom. So if you have an open wound in your mouth or stomach (such as an ulcer or a recent tonsilectomy...) you'd probably feel quite bad after consuming this delicacy. Otherwise, there's a higher chance of surviving after eating that meal than there is dieing.
