Help with Audio! 2 Sound inputs at once!!!

Edit: could i mod change the title to "Help with Audio! 2 Sound output at once!!!" i put Input in title rather then Output

Ok so for a long time i have been trying to figure this out and cant for the life of me get it. Basically what i was is to essentially be able to choose what output the sound of my computer comes out of.

My on board sound has out 5 audio out ports and as a example i want to have FFXI and vent come out of my headset and be able to play MP3s come out of my stereo that is on my desk as well.

I realize i may need to buy a second sound card, and i dont mind that, i really just want to know if it is possible to do before i go out and buy a second card.

    Any ideas?

it depends on the setup of your drivers and how it controls the outward ports, also depends on what programs you're using as some are able to pick where outputs are going (ventrilo etc) others just use the default sound card which windows designates and to my knowledge windows only uses one at a time for everything.

By the looks of it, Windows Media Player has a Output option where you can change where it is coming out from. So by that i should be able to get a second sound card, install the drivers and have WMP come out of the secondary card is that correct?

Do you want them to play at the same time, or do you just hate crawling under the desk to switch the plugs in the back? I can't help you with option 1, but here's what I got to deal with option 2.

You'll need a 2nd card so you can define vent/mp3 to use that output instead. Make sure you set the secondary application to not use directsound or else it'll get confused with the other app running.
