Ripping sound / Audacity

I am currently trying to rip the audio from a .mpg video file that I have recorded with my point-and-shoot and create it to a mp3. I upload the video into Audacity but when I play the sound, it comes up with high pitched squeels/whines every now and then without showing up on the wavelengths. Does anyone know how to fix this, or have another solution (possibly different program?)

Might try using Virtualdub.

Otherwise maybe look at some of the other demux/mux programs there Video De/Multiplexers n' perhaps look on those forums if you continue to have problems (not trying to chase you off, just sayin', video stuff is what they're all about).

Assuming, of course, that the issue is in the audio extraction.

Ah cool. I see that the majority of them only work for windows; i'm on mac osx.

My solution to Audacity, which I've used to record MP3 ringtones for my roommates from various videos, is to play the video using Media Player Classic or VLC and have Audacity open at the same time. While the video is playing, I just record whatever is coming out of my sound card with Audacity. Then I trim it down to the section of the audio I want. That way you don't have to try to demux a video file, you just record live while the video plays.

^ this. Set sound input to Stereo Mix, hit record, and hit play in whatever player you're using.
