Take a bottle cap, punch a hole in the cap with a thumbtack or something, stick a toothpick in it and keep the toothpick elevated so it doesn't touch whatever the surface the bottle cap is on, light the toothpick on fire, put it in the microwave, turn it on, watch for a little while.

It shouldn't damage the microwave, maybe shorten lifespan by a very small amount. It looks like it should damage the microwave, but it's fine from my experiences. Plastic cap is a necessity.
