    Benadryl?

So I've been unable to sleep for quite a long time and to force my self to sleep (so I don't have such a retarded schedule) I've turned to benadryl. At first it was working okay. Two benadryl and I'd be out within the hour. Well after three months or so of taking benadryl almost every night I'm kinda starting to worry.

I'm not addicted to it but without it I really can't sleep. The problem comes when it requires atleast 8 pills to knock me out. Eight pills a night sounds pretty bad for my body. When I don't take benadryl regardless of what time I wake up I'll be up until the next morning around 8am or so.

So I'm asking if benadryl is large doses like that is a bad idea (which I think is)

Also I'm unable to go to a doctor and gets something prescribed to me cause I don't have insurance at the moment.

    Contradicting statements.

Time to wean yourself off. Have fun, learn from your mistakes and don't do something this stupid again.

i used bendryl heavily in high school and was up to about 8 a day before i stopped using it for a few months to lower my tolerance again. Im sure its not great for you but this is more of a sign that the crutch needs to be tossed aside.

Benedryl sleep isnt even good. try swimming for a few hours, or any other activity thats low work but consistant. dont lay in your bed until you get drowsy either, if you watch tv or read there your body could get used to it not being for sleep.

I'm guessing you don't exercise much do you? And I agree with whoever mentioned swimming, for whatever reason it makes me drowsy as hell.

Taking that much benadryl is not good for your liver.. I'd ween off or stop altogether, do some major exercising and you will fall asleep hella quick due to being tired...

If you can't sleep, try some homeopathic stuff... Melatonin works decently..

    8 pills of 50mg? Or only 25mg?

Because 400mg of benadryl will make you trip if you stay awake. Have fun with the imaginary spiders.

Back when I worked stupid shifts I found that if I drank a pint of beer before bed I'd be out soon as I hit the pillow. Can try that, just don't overdo it on the booze.

I'd try not taking any Benadryl and just go to bed when you are tired, you will likely not sleep very much but you at least will do it naturally. In the morning you will likely want to sleep a lot longer, but force yourself up at around 6-8 hours of sleep.

From here on, go to bed whenever you feel tired. It may take a while until you start falling asleep earlier. Work your way down to your desired sleeping time. Due to sleep deprivation catching up, you will be able to sleep once you hit the pillow. Just gotta force yourself to get up and not sleep 15+ hours when you crash and burn (this is the hardest part).

Also, make sure not to sit in bed and read, play video games, etc. Your brain will start to associate going to bed with these things, instead of SLEEPING.

This is a problem for me as well. A couple weeks ago I went to bed at 9AM, so far I can still only sleep at 3-6AM, but it's an improvement. Good luck!

Real men don't use sleeping aids ^.

If you're having trouble sleeping, see a doctor, have them do a sleep study. Not being able to sleep simply isn't normal, and is often a sign of an underlying medical condition.

Delayed sleep phase syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have this... can't sleep until like 6am at the earliest no matter how hard I try (if I don't try 8am is about the time I'll start getting tired). If I go to bed at that time, I sleep more or less normally and I feel fine. I've learned to deal with it by just working/going to school/socializing in the afternoons and evenings, and then filling the nights with games, MMOs and other at home activities. That said, it's kind of a rare problem so you might want to check with a doctor and see if you have anything else that might be going on.

I haven't had much success with Melatonin but some of my friends have, you can buy that at any pharmacy/vitamin store, but meh. In terms of antihistamines that cause drowsiness, I personally think Tylenol PM/Simply Sleep or even Dramamine is a lot better than benadryl, but that's just me.

Xanax/benzos are fantastic for falling asleep but they're really only supposed to be used short term. Ambien and the z-drugs are quite effective but maybe a bit dangerous and Lunesta is ungodly expensive if you don't have insurance. And don't take trazadone if you don't want to feel like you've been hit by a bus the next day.

But yea... with few exceptions any sleep aid, prescription or not, is meant to be used short term, so it's far more beneficial to get into the kinds of healthy diet/exercise routines that will make it so you can sleep without them.

Try swapping the benadryl for a cup or two of chamomile tea an hour or so before going to bed. It's helped me a little with my own lack of falling asleep issues.
