Dick Cheney ordered the CIA to hide secret programme from Congress

Straight forward title. He apparently ordered the CIA (since when does a vice president have that authority?) to hide a counterrorism programme that never went fully operational even though by law the intelligence agencies must inform Congress of these activities. It is belived that the Bush administration made it a high priority to conceal this programme. What the programm is and what it does is yet unknown. Does anyone still oppose an investigation, and even prosecution when this is a clear breach of US law?

The Central Intelligence Agency withheld information about a secret counterterrorism program from Congress for eight years on direct orders from former Vice President Dick Cheney, the agency’s director, Leon E. Panetta, has told the Senate and House intelligence committees, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said Saturday.

The report that Mr. Cheney was behind the decision to conceal the still-unidentified program from Congress deepened the mystery surrounding it, suggesting that the Bush administration had put a high priority on the program and its secrecy.

Mr. Panetta, who ended the program when he first learned of its existence from subordinates on June 23, briefed the two intelligence committees about it in separate closed sessions the next day.

Efforts to reach Mr. Cheney through relatives and associates were unsuccessful.

Even if this story is true nothing will come of it. Call me when they actually arrest someone.

Edit: Arrest someone who isn't just a fall guy like Libby.

He was a fall guy because he drew attention away from the people who actually should have been facing charges. They threw him under the bus.

2 senators: CIA concealment may have broken law - Salon.com

Jul 12th, 2009 | WASHINGTON -- Six months into Barack Obama's presidency, twin investigations may be on the horizon into Bush-era policies in the war on terror.

Two senators including the head of the intelligence committee suggested Sunday that the prior administration broke the law by concealing a CIA counter-terrorism program from Congress.

The assertion that Vice President Dick Cheney ordered the concealment came amid word that Attorney General Eric Holder is contemplating opening a criminal probe of possible CIA torture.

Regarding the 8-year-old counter-terrorism program, the Bush administration's failure to notify Congress "is a big problem, because the law is very clear," said Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.
This shit is very clear. The government is rotten from the inside out and if this shit is not investigated thoroughly and prosecutions rolled out, it's going to spread and get worse. What in the world would stop politicians from breaking the law if they think they can get away with it because an administration prefers its political capital over upholding the damn law?

Nothing. Breaking the law is easy when you think you can get away with it.

Nothing will change. It would probably take the equivolent of 100 Nixon scandals and a few more unjustified war before the american people would probably bat an eye and this type of shit. Nothing has changed and I have so much scorn directed at the american political system that I really believe the best we can only hope for is Anything but more of the same.
