Possible RRoD or a One TIme Occurance?

Ok kids. So I went to turn on my 360 this morning and I was greeted with the dreaded red rings of death. After my initial rage I unplugged everything on the console and then plugged it back in. Everything worked fine after that and the console worked perfectly throughout the day. I fired it up again this evening and again everything seems fine. My main concern is for all of the DLC that I have saved onto the hard drive. Because should it be fried I've been told that once Microsoft repairs the console when you reinstall the hard drive it wipes it clean because it needs reformatted.

So, has anyone else come across this situation with the RRoD? Did it end up killing your console or was it something that only happened one time? And if it did kill the console, did you end up losing your DLC once you got the console back?

And to all a weave night.

When my 360 RROD'd it was a gradual thing. Occasional disk read errors, RR once a month, then CoD4 started locking up, eventually I got video corruption and then RROD which didn't go away.

As for the games, you don't send your HD in with your 360. If they repair it (which as far as I know requires that the console be completely broken) they'll send it back and you'll need to use the account migration tool to reassociate your DLC with your new 360, then you can redownload it from account management and it'll all be kosher again.

(note, if you don't redownload it it will still work but only for the account that it belongs to rather than being available for all gamertags on the box)

Yeah, I've had this happen to me months ago. It RRoD'd but then after I unplugged it and replugged it, it worked fine... but it won't read my FFXI discs. So I ended up buying a new FFXI disc, because I thought my disc was too scratched up. Still didn't work. I dunno how to fix it, I've tried a billion times. This happened months ago, and it still won't work, and my 360 isn't full-blown RRoD'd yet, so... can't exactly send it in for repairs.

My FFXI disc used to be really flaky too, my Xbox works fine but as soon as I tried to play XI it got Disc Read Error, then it would do the same with other games on occasion. Never had any problems with it since I quit FFXI though, really baffled me.

And your downloads are linked to your Gamertag, assuming you use the same one on your new HD you should be able to redownload the DLC for free. But don't quote me on that. Still using my first HD on my 3rd Xbox.

Was it 3 red bars or only 1? I've gotten the 1 red bar numerous times, means the cables arent connected right.

My Xbox died in about 1hr. Playing call of duty, then suddenly lines across the screen and it froze, reset and it had 3 red lights. Started it up again after 5 minutes, played CoD for another 15 minutes, same thing. Happened a couple more times, then wouldn't turn on.

That was a mobo failure (ie: desoldered components, can be fixed with a heatgun) If it fails to start up again, you can check the error code (lots of tutorials online) and find out whats up with it and potentially fix it.

Oh and it doesn't wipe the HDD if you send it in. You keep the HDD with you, then when you get it back you make sure to plug in the HDD while the console is powered off. He probably fucked up by trying to plug it in while it was on.

It was the three rings. Not losing the DLC puts my mind at ease though. That was my biggest concern. I've pumped so much money into the various games I have I would rage if that all disappeared.

the 360 is so damn buggy it's unreal. It has most of the good games too. For the first month i had it, i stood it upright like i thought i should. BIIIIG mistake. I hear this horrible screeching noise, and it had tore the fuck out of my oblivion disk. I was so pissed i went to the store i bought it at and did the ole switcheroo-return bit to get another disk.

I love my 360, but I hate Microsoft for releasing it in the form it is. They knowingly released a product with numerous technical flaws as well as very serious flaws that result from degradation over time. Say what you will about the high price of the PS3, at least they don't seem to end up having catastrophic internal errors.

Yup I think she's done. I was playing NHL 09 and turned it off to meet my brother in law for lunch. He wasn't able to go so I fired it back up and the welcoming sight of the red rings greeted me. Unplugged everything and tried again with no luck at all. Depending on how much Microsoft is going to charge me to fix it I may have my buddy at Gamestop swap it out with a refurbished one. We'll see. I'm fairly sure it's not covered under the warranty since it's older. I has sadness.

Gamestop refurbishes consoles? I would trust a Microsoft repair over Gamestop's used hardware stock 11 times out of 10. They don't send you a box/foam packing materials anymore but I'm sure someone will sell you a pack.

What others said about DLC is true, everything you DL is tied to your gamertag, so if you lose your HDD you can recover your tag and redownload anything again.

I had a weird RROD the week I bought my Xbox, but then it didn't happen again for over a year and then it was the real RROD. Secondly, when I sent it in for replacement, they asked for console only, no cables, controllers, games in tray, and most importantly, they said to take the hdd off and to not send that back.

Yeah I was wondering if I should pack up my cables etc. But I figured they wouldn't need them. I don't have a printer at home so I had did the option where they will mail you the packing slip. So it says I should get that in about 4 days or so. My console is out of warranty so I'm sure I'm probably going to be shelling out a hundred bucks if not more which is irritating as shit.

You literally send just the console off without the HDD. That's it. They say like a million times "nothing else".

    How good of a friend is your buddy at GameStop? There are numerous ways to remedy this without shelling out money to Microsoft; I've swapped 3 Elites now at GameStop, able to get the new SKU each time.. but obviously it's not like it has really mattered too much that they were new. >.>;

Now if you can get MS to do it for free, then that's another story.

Well MS will repair it free aslong as its 3 red lights, and within 3 years warranty. Won't replace it, but it's still free fix.

I wasn't charged shit. My warranty was expired as well and they renewed it for free, and threw in a free one-month XBL Gold card. At least they're considerate. And you don't pay a lick for sending it by UPS either, you just drop off your package. Literally no money is spent if your 360 RRoD's. That's the good thing about it at least.

My concern stems from the fact that when I filled out the online repair form slip it said I was out of warranty and that I could be subject to charges etc. I have already had my buddy swap out one of my prior 360's and one of my friends. So I didn't want to ask him to do it again, I don't really want to get the kid in trouble. I'm not too worried about it though. We'll see what happens.
