Any way to improve ps1/ps2 graphics when playing on a ps3?

I've been wanting to replay a couple of ps2 games I have laying around, but playing them on my 60 GB ps3 I've noticed the graphics aren't as good compared to playing them on a ps2. Right now I've been using component cables (5 pronged cable) if it matters. I remember hearing that upscaling was added but only worker with a HDMI cable, so would that be all I would need to fix this? I know about the ps/ps2 upscale and smoothing features under the game settings option too, but that still doesn't seem to bring the graphics to where they should be. Thanks in advance.

There's a texture smoothing option in the settings, if I recall, but I also have an 80GB - not sure if it's exclusive to the software backwards compatibility.

If it doesn't have backwards compatibility it won't play at all, so its a moot point

I don't think that's applicable in this case. It's just that the original generation PS3s used emulation which was hardware based, then they came out with software based emulation which was crappier before disbanding it altogether. The OP can obviously play the games on their console, just not at the quality they would like. Isiolia was just commenting on a possible solution but not sure if it were applicable to the OP since the detail of hardware/software virtualization was left out.

Yes, but there's hardware backwards compatibility (as the OP's 60GB would have) and the (at least partial) software backwards compatibility that my PS3 (MGS4 bundle) has.

Whether they have the same exact options/results, I don't know, as I've only ever used the software variant.

Not sure if it's an HDMI issue or not, but I found my PS3 over HDMI to be better than my PS2 over component. It at least maintains the right aspect ratios doing that without having to fuss with the TV.

Ah, gotcha. I thought you were comparing the backwards compatible PS3's (as a general case) to the non.. which, of course, would not make sense I wish I could help but I got one of the later 80GB's with no backwards compatibility
