    Lord of Arcana(SE MH)

God Eater is coming state side this year and it looked alright. I'm not sure about this though.

    Lets see what it has

-Can tell from the video it has a good OST
    -oh shit what Lock-on?
    -Battle Damage?

    Story

Lord of Arcana takes place in a world called Horodyn, named after the land's first king. Somewhere in Horodyn lies an ancient stone known only as "Arcana", which apparently holds great magical power. Unfortunately, as well as humans, the world is home to many great and powerful monsters and beasts, which are fought by warriors known as Slayers who seek Arcana.

    Gameplay

The gameplay of Lord of Arcana has been compared to that of Capcom's seminal Monster Hunter series.

    Development

The monsters featured in Lord of Arcana are designed by many great artists from around the world. This, among other factors such as the logo design, has fuelled rumours that Lord of Arcana is based on Lord of Vermilion, an arcade-based card-battle game (similar to Yu-Gi-Oh! and The Eye of Judgement) released only in Japan.

I'll play it, looks more fun than Monster Hunter to me and addresses some of the things I didn't like about the MH games (mainly how fucking slow they are)
I'm also laughing at people saying lock-on could never work well in MH, I kept saying it could easily be done. If this implementation is actually useful as I believe it will be... I'll have put thousands on hush mouth.

Im with chari, even tho I love MH, I still agree it could use some sort of lock on.

I was going to say that the hat looked like a blue RDM hat but then I realized it was a SE title. Interesting looking game. I love the artwork in Lord of Vermilion.

Obviously need to see more, but I really wasn't impressed with God Eater as much as I thought I would be.

I get that, but to me God Eater is TOO fast. I like the skill involved in the different fights in MH. I like that you have to at least think about things a bit. With God Eater there is one open area, so there is no real chance that you will lose your 'mark'. There is very little need to gather the items in the area, though there are shinies all around.

And when it comes to the Bosses themselves they just all feel the same. Each fight felt like "Pew pew pew! Switch to sword. Slash slash slash. Switch to gun. Pew pew pew!" with the only strategy being to run in circles and spam the same attacks.

There also wasn't enough weapon variety for me... but who knows, maybe online it would be a lot more fun? I have yet to play anything other than offline (which is still a 1-4 player team with the others being NPCs).

Sorry for the digression, but I do have high hopes for anything that gets compared to Monster Hunter, even when it is only similar (love that Demon's Souls!). So I do hope this ends up being great.

IS THAT A FUCKING HEALTH BAR? CASUALS. It looks like the lock on works exactly the same as God Eater (only effects the camera, it doesn't do all your aiming and shit for you). Trailer doesn't look too interesting for this but we'll see how it goes, I don't think it'll top God Eater personally.

They're for making items (be those consumables, weapons/shields or accessories). Not to use against the enemy or anything.

I can agree with this. Only 3 melee weapons was kind of offputting at first, but short sword and long swords are both fun as hell to me, so I don't mind too much. Despite having more options in MH I only really went with 2 weapon types at a time anyway. Bullet customization more than makes up for it if you like gunning too, you can do some crazy shit with it. And multiplayer is most definitely more fun than with AI, but it's still essentially the same game after all, so if you don't like it single player you're not gonna like multiplayer.

Wait... you like 'losing your mark'..? Why?
It's not fun chasing monsters around the map anyway. The monster running away when weakened was pretty cool at first but after you've seen it happen once or twice it is just an annoyance from then on. I'm glad other games don't put that shit in.

And camera lock is exactly what lock on does in tons of action games... and these games FUCKING NEED THAT since they are on PSP and tend to have awful camera controls on handhelds... like Monster Hunter (another one of my main gripes with MH on PSP)

I'm 99% certain I'm going to like this a lot more than MHFU, doesn't even have to do a lot to be better, really.

The thing is... monsters DO run away in God Eater too. Generally just to the nearest shiny (which is not far at all, they're all over the map). It's much better in that there's only one big area (not much smaller than MH maps, but no loading bullshit), so you can still SEE the monster at the opposite side of the map as opposed to not knowing where the hell it went in MH. I do not understand the complaint at all.

God Eater most certainly requires skill just like Monster Hunter too. Most definitely a different kind of skill (gotta be quick and react a fair bit faster in God Eater as opposed to "reading" the monsters moves like in MH), but still just as much as. I'd honestly say God Eater is harder than MH, and I'm not even anywhere near the final missions (10 ranks, even on rank 5 some of the fights can be a bastard, I never had issues with Monster Hunter).

Edit: And as nice as lock on is, the game tends to throw multiple monsters at you constantly once you're a bit further in, so lock on starts to be useless at that point as it's much better to keep on eye on everything with the free camera. Despite using the same controls scheme for it (dpad), it seems to control a lot better (faster for one) than MH's camera. I've never really had to resort to claw shenanigans.

That trailer almost reminded me of PSO.

I've never really got into the MH series, I tried the PSP version but the controls and camera felt so awful. I might have to try this out though.

You know... I honestly don't know why I brought up losing your mark in MH in comparison. I guess it was meant to be just that, a comparison. I definitely don't enjoy chasing a limping monster 4 maps away...

I do like pacing of MH in general though, and I know that it isn't fair to compare the Arena Battles in MH to the fights in God Eater because the Arena is quite a bit smaller... but it has a similar feeling to me.

I also wonder how much of my lack of enjoyment of God Eater after a few weeks with it is down to a language barrier. I am sure that it would be a lot more fun if i could understand bullet creation without a google-translated wiki, or being able to readily see the element attributes of weapons and boss attacks...

I plan on giving it another chance, and will definitely be giving Arcana a chance. I just hope it takes the best parts of both of these games, and tosses in something amazing and new. I will still be getting the NA version of God Eater as soon as it is out, if only to give it a proper shake.

As detailed in this week's Famitsu, the game's demo will see periodic updates. The updates add new scenarios, allowing players to continually play right until the final version's release.

There's good reason to get the most out of the demo. Your data will carry over to the final version, allowing you to start off with a more advanced Slayer.

That is a damn good idea. What a great way to keep interest high right up until the release.

Not working on any custom Firmware FYI. Ya know, from the gameplay vids this really is a lot different than I expected. Still looks promising but much farther removed from MH than I thought. The boss battle looks about right, but getting there looks much more detailed and drawn out =)

Doesn't look like the QTE shit is generally necessary, I kept seeing the same moves leading into the QTEs... though that might just be 'cause he kept using the same combo, idk.

Either way, the game looks like it should be a lot of fun! Certainly more fun than a Shenmue 3 would be!
