FFXI "Jumpy"

Forgive my terrible knowledge of all things pc to begin with lol.

So yeah, I reinstalled ffxi on a new pc, only major change to old PC was vista, everything runs fine and boots etc, just FFXI refuses to run smoothly. Every three seconds or so the game freezes up for a second and resumes. Any suggestions as to what to do?

Acer Aspire x3200
Rating: 4.2
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 7450 Dual-Core Processor 2.4GHz
RAM: 3GB
System: 32bit OS

There is a few thread about this with solution posted, but none ever worked for me. Try setting FFXI thread to high priority (in task manager). I think it was one of the solution that worked for a few people.

idk if it'd apply to ffxi, but you can try the AMD dual core optimizer

Is it a kind of "jumpiness" that simply causes the game not to run smoothly but doesn't affect FPS in any way? I've had that since I got my new Vista PC, and none of the solutions here have made the slightest bit of difference. Honestly, I didn't even realise there was a problem until I watched other people's FFXI videos and wondered why their graphics looked so much more fluid (not necessarily better) than my own. The jumps are very small but regular, such that you can't usually see them unless you're actively looking for them but they do make a big difference to the overall fluidity of the game.

Does that sound anything like your issue or are your jumps big enough to actually cause FPS to drop when they occur? That happened to me after I reformatted my PC, and it turned out Norton was the culprit. However, that didn't sort out the issue of the small stutterings.

There are a number of suggestions in that thread. In particular I will point out that there is a post in there by me where I quote a guy who gave me a solution that worked perfectly.

Do yourself a favor when disabling those devices though. After each device, test both your keyboard and mouse to see that they both still work. If one stopped working, re-enable the device before you go any further. Last thing you want to do is disable both your keyboard and mouse :-p

Adjusted it to 0 by following the manual step on that guide.

This is extremely unintuitive but according to the article:

NOTE: If you disable this setting or do not configure it, the system uses the default value of 20 percent of the connection.

Apparently you should enable it and set it to 0 if you want to turn it off.

EDIT: In fact, Windows Local Group Policy Editor says the same thing:

If you disable this setting or do not configure it, the system uses the default value of 20 percent of the connection.

You can find this on the "Explain" tab of the Limit reservable bandwidth properties in Local Group Policy Editor.

So yeah, enable it and set to 0.

Personally I don't think this would do much for FFXI in particular (it is limited to the connection speed of a 56k modem after all) but I'd still rather not prioritize windows updates when I'm using my computer for other stuff. Those updates can d/l while I sleep.
