I found the main site, OSx86 Project | InsanelyMac and skimmed through a few guides, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried doing this yet, installing os x/leopard/SL on their PC? or anyone have any insight on SL, something along the lines of: I've tried both and it's absolutely, hands down better than win7.

I'm thinking of doing this with my AMD Phenom II x4 3ghz out of boredom and curiousity, but don't know if it's worth the trouble of learning/doing it. The biggest issue is that it'll take 2 hard drives to go from Leopard to Snow and with wanting to keep my win7 install and using drives for storage, it'd be troublesome.

i got all of the "tools" & ISO ready for this a few weeks ago and then sort of forgot/lost interest. it seems cool but i just haven't had time. if i get around to it i'll post here (although i'm on an oc'd core 2 duo e6600), keep us updated if you try it as well

It's harder to get working on AMD, and since you need to use a custom kernel, it'd be more of a pain to keep working. As opposed to an Intel system that could be tricked into using the vanilla kernel, and then probably be able to receive updates n' all without breaking.

As for the reasons to do it, OS opinions, etc... lots of OSes have their upsides and downsides. Fun just to try different ones anyway. Snow Leopard isn't a huge leap forward in terms of end-user features. If you're just curious about OS X, then 10.5 will be pretty similar - SL is just more polished, and more optimized under the hood ('course, part of that has to do with dropping PowerPC support). It'd likely be easier to get 10.5 working is partly why I'd say that.

What you might look into is a Mac Mini. While a new one (just recently revised) is $600 (starting), you can find older ones for $300 or so on eBay. It's not free as in torrenting a custom kernel install of 10.5, but it's a lot cheaper than buying a new Mac Pro or something.

I've done it on my Q6600 with ATI 4850. Took the better half of a day to get everything working flawlessly, but once it was working it was fine. The problem then was dualbooting with windows. If you're expecting to be able to keep your existing windows installation and then install OS X think on. You'll need to backup your Windows stuff, install OS X, Bootcamp Windows.

I've tried it and it's a cool weekend project to do. I was curious about OSX since I've never used it and installed it on my friends older HP laptop. 5 months ago I upgraded it to SL for him and it was running great but not as good as Tiger (more compatibility w/ his model). Only downsides for him is his wireless only working when running Safari's network troubleshooter, no ethernet connection, and running too hot but he uses a cooling pad.

It's just like Blabj said, you have to dedicate sometime to getting your hardware to work perfectly (online research, downloading kext files, editing them etc). My advice to you is to do research on your build first to check and see if your setup has been done before and there aren't any hardware problems.

Look up iDeneb. Seems to be one of the easiest ways to run a Hackintosh. Not saying I have much experience with it, but I installed it on my asus eee netbook for the hell of it.

Not sure how well it works installing on AMD chipsets or the like.

It can be a pain in the ass to get all your hardware working, depending on what you have. If you're going out and building a hackintosh from scratch, it's not bad, but otherwise I don't think it's worth the hassle.

Hmm, looking deeper into the wiki, it seems my motherboard: ASUS m2n68-vm is supported by iDeneb v1.4 10.5.6 / 9.5.0 Voodoo Kernel

"Installaion Method

Check : 9.5.0 Voodoo Kernel, AppleNForceATA, Forcedeath, AppleSMBIOS 800, Seatbelt Fix and Other Applications. After installation apply the kexts from ACHISATAFIX using Kext Helper into the extensions (System/Library/Extensions/) and boot with -v -x to get rid of "still waiting for root device" error."

So... unless anyone sees any major roadblocks in their install method, going to start looking up wtf any of that means. :D
