    Making ringtones

So I just got a Samsung Impression the other day (love at first sight.... most badass QWERTY on a touchscreen phone...) and I pretty much hate all of the stock ring tones. Basically my question is this: how do I go about making my own? I think I read somewhere that the tone needs to be 300k or less, which seems awfully small, so do I need to downscale the MP3? Looking for good suggestions on programs to convert youtube to MP3, a free program to pull out the section of track I want, and possibly something to change the bitrate of the sample.

    Thanks.

I use zedge.net to create or download ringtones, nice site. Also, usually phones with ringtone file size limits have some sort of way of getting around them. I would google it for your exact model.

    1) Download Adobe Audition (you know where to find it, kekeke).

    2) Find about a 10-20 second section of the song you want and crop the audio to that section.

    3) Put a fade-out at the end and a slight fade-in at the beginning.

    4) Export as WAV and convert to MP3 using RazorLAME and set the ringtone quality as 96kpbs.

    5) This should make it under 300k, which is what most mobile phones restrict the size to.

I have a Samsung Solstice and every ringtone on there that I use is custom-made. I can't stand stock ringtones.

Myxer - Download Ringtones and More works for me...
It tells you what you need to do on their site, and there are a hell of a lot of ringtones there, and you can even make your own. It's easy to use, and if you don't like a part of the song someone picked for a ringtone, you can go in and change where you want it to start and stop for you.

Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

That's what I've been using. There are a lot more ways to edit, but I simply cut the piece of a song that I want, then paste it as a new file.

use either audacity, or audition or whatever. For most newer phones you don't have to restrict them (assuming you use the method im describing).

I use bitpim. You can connect your phone either via bluetooth tethering (COM ports) or a direct connection via a cable. Using bitpim you can then copy the file directly into the directory of the phone, or transfer it via its ringtone transferring feature.

Seconding Audacity. It's quite an easy program to use.

File size limits for ring tones, are you certain? All phones I've used the last 5 years have let me just select any mp3 file on the phone as a ringtone.

A lot of touch-screen or smartphones these days have an OS that limits the file size to 300k.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, been out of town for a couple days, but I'll certainly give some of these a try.
