Why would going from VGA to DVI cable make my picture worse?

So I can't figure this out.

I got a nice new monitor (well, nice-ish, no hdmi), hooked it up via VGA cable for until I had time to pick up a DVI. Everything looked great, super sharp, blah blah.

Today I got the DVI cable, hooked it up through that... and suddenly everything is like... blocky and blurry and shitty looking. I've tried messing with color settings and whatnot to no avail.

Any ideas on settings I might be missing somewhere or something? I can't seem to find anything.

Digital dignals tend to be sharper, and yes that means being more blocky. Analog signals smooth hard edges as a by-product of their signal strength.

Granted if it's super extreme there's something wrong, but if it's only slight that's normal.

what kind of resolution are you running at? I've never had trouble with a dvi cable when I've used them, but I do remember when dvi first started being used with pc's that some video cards that had them didn't have the power (in the chip that converted the signal for dvi) to send a good signal above certain resolutions. Again this was a few years ago, but I do remember that and it may be worth putting a little google-fu to work and see if you turn something up.

First thing that came to my mind was that your resolution got changed. Some monitors don't scale lower resolutions very well, making the image appear blurry. Make sure you're running at your monitor's optimal resolution and that scaling options (in both your monitor's menu, if applicable, and your display driver) are off.

It's really weird and hard to explain, I'm not even sure it's affecting everything.

But like certain games (specifically gta4) the edge of big letters and stuff looks like... pixelated almost, kind of blocky.

And then some pictures, especially my desktop look like... grainy or something.

Running the monitor at max resolution, 1920x1080.

I'm really confused as to what's going on. WoW still looks pretty much the same, and I can still run it at max resolution with the settings on "ultra" (i.e. absolutely everything as high as it goes) with no lag even in raids.

even just looking at my sig here-- the cloth in the background looks flawlessly detailed, even like the shoulder of the jersey there you can see the pattern perfectly with no blurring or pixelation... but then his actual face is all grainy

Could just be that the image is sharper than you're normally used to? I notice a bit of granularity in the face of your signature, but that's normal JPEG degradation.
