Revamping a Frankenbuild

Back in 2006 I made the mistake of ordering an HP computer. Absolute lemon from the start (had to send it back to have motherboard replaced, then again for the same issue). Right about after warranty expired, my crappy video card (GeForce 7300LE) that came with the computer... I guess overheated, and the fan on the card actually warped, producing an obnoxious whirrwhirr noise that drove me insane.

So, I replaced the video card, and picked up a new PSU since the 300w standard one couldn't support the card. Quickly (5 minutes quick) realized the dinky HP case couldn't handle the size/heat the card produced, so essentially gutted the HP and transferred everything to an older/larger case with moderately better airflow. Eventually replaced that case with an Antec 902 because the old case was as loud as a jet engine.

I'm now finding my motherboard is finally crapping out (PS/2 for the keyboard died, plug-in for my speakers died, sudden shut down once, mild overheating from what I can tell-- but can't find temps in the BIOS), and am looking to replace it/finish replacing the parts of said frankenbuild.

Currently the thing has:
Unknown motherboard, I think ASUS w/ GeForce 6150 LE chipset (according to HP's site)
Unknown RAM, 3.0GB (2GB new +1GB original RAM that came with)
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
Corsair 650watt PSU
SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express etcetc.. video card
Some Lightscribe? DVD drive, IDE connection, probably will replace (idk blu ray or cheap DVD drive yet)
OS HDD (SATA connection, think it's beginning to fail too), 120GB
WD HDD 1TB for storage (SATA connection, new)
Antec 902 case

I'm looking at replacing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM with:

As well as replacing the DVD drive and maybe picking up another HDD for the operation system (and maybe Windows 7 64bit if I can't get my XP disc to work). Really, mobo/CPU/RAM are higher priority, and the DVD drive if the motherboard in question is ok, since I don't see any IDE connection on it.

Question is: will this set-up work with what I already have and have replaced? Is the stock heatsink/fan with that CPU decent, or do I need to replace that too? Any advice/suggestions (or mocking, in Ceph's case-- hi you) are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you're mostly talking about reusing the case/PSU, plus video card, which should be fine. As you mentioned, that mobo lacks IDE support - but a SATA drive is cheap.

Stock cooling for any CPU is generally perfectly fine unless you're overclocking, or in some cases with a small/nonstandard case design.

Suggestion might be to look at an i5-750 build or the like, unless you specifically want something the i7-900 series gives you. You could probably knock $200 or more off the price between CPU, motherboard, and a 4GB RAM kit instead of the 6GB.

A cheap 785G board may let you resurrect your current system as a backup/living room/torrent box/etc too.
