Someone wanna explain to me the difference between Record- and Album of the Year?

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Musi...ex.html?hpt=C1

    excerpts in question:
Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Taylor Swift won the biggest Grammy of the night, album of the year for her CD "Fearless."
Alternative rock band Kings of Leon upset favorites Beyonce and Swift to win the record of the year Grammy for "Use Somebody."

Record is single I'm fairly sure, album obviously isn't.

album, release, cd, record, recording, song, single, ep, lp have become far too interchangeable

This is kind of obvious though.

1 song vs more than 1 song.

Single records have 1 track <_< it used to be a good way to get extra sales out of an album by coming out with like 5 versions of the song and just releasing it as its own disc.

    Normal
    Remix
    Instrumental
    A capella
    and one last remix.

for me a record is a 45 or an LP, possibly an EP, or other various forms of vinyl

a "hit record" is a bit slang to me, but even so, it's an entire album in my understanding

maybe I'm off here, but I have not once heard 'record' to refer to a single song, seems counter-intuitive

that's 5 songs sir, I have tons of those (5 songs on one disc, it's commonly referred to as a single, as is the title track)

The part that is particularly retarded is how it's not the same as song of the year.

Yeah, singles are implied to have B-sides at least.

1 track, 1 song, the only song, on one record (or CD these days) released for consumption (and not shipped directly to radio stations or put inside a magazine slip, those are different) is an odd occurrence

Also, it's at the very most 3 songs if you count remixes. A capella and Instrumental should not count as their own "songs".

I have seen 2 original songs and as many as 7, although that particular flaming lips ep or loosely termed 'single' was a standalone release iirc (sec, lemme look it up)

oh, nope it was a single, it was for Fight Test by The Flaming Lips, and apparently there only 6, but still, that's a lot of original tracks for a 'single'

and then there's ep + 6 by Mogwai!! but that is confusing the issue perhaps :)
