    Laggy Internet

I'll be surprised if I'm able to make just one of these threads without my internet making two of them.

Anyway, my internet is lagging a lot, but my roommate's doesn't.

We're both on ethernet, plugged into the same router. There's no one else on the router (I've checked multiple times) and neither of us are running torrents.

My computer is brand new, but my old one did this too which is why it's bothering me so much. At some points during the day, like now for instance, I can hardly even get to ANY webpage let alone one I want to get to. All of my vidya games are really laggy too (pingwise, not FPS wise) and I can't figure out why it's only my computer.

I'm looking for anyone who can help me identify or (hopefully) fix the problem. I really don't know what else to look for, and I have no idea how to monitor exactly how my router is allocating its usage to various computers.

Help please D: I hate waiting 5 minutes to try and navigate from the forums to tech to making a new thread =(

A little off the top of my head. But are you sure your roomie isn't throttling your internet via the router.

I'm not quite sure what that means, but my lag appears to have dissipated since his girlfriend left, I need to figure out how to basically cap her internet because she's just a stupid bitch who plays WoW when she comes over

What he's referring to is you can throttle certain IPs/MAC addresses down to whatever speed and the roommate might have done that.

Even if it's not that it sounds like something with the router if it comes and goes. Have you tried switching which ports your cable runs to?

You'd have to go into your router settings by opening IE/Firefox/Chrome/etc and go to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 depending on how it's setup (those are the standard ranges most routers use). You can't do much with it though if he's changed the default password. If he hasn't, it's probably admin with no password or admin/password.

Also, the girlfriend playing WoW should use next to nothing bandwidth, unless she's patching.

Maybe her and he have lots of bittorrent running in the system tray.

You can try resetting the router also using the button found on the bottom (this will set it back to default settings, so if you have wireless or any special settings they will need to be set up again). This will reset the log in information back to default also.

If it is a linksys model router and you wanna check those settings (192.168.1.1 is default ip) than google the model of router it is and you can find the default log in information for that router if your roommate hasn't changed it.

Mine's a shitty 2wire AT&T router, and as far as I know there's no specific option called 'throttling' or anything like that in there like QOS or something that came up during my searches. I remember I used to cap the wireless to 1mbps (although our shit internet probably doesn't even do that much) but I don't think I ever saw any way to cap the individual ethernet ports.

It also appears that the individual ports are to blame here after some testing the other night, what can cause this if it's not throttling and is there any known fix? I'm starting to think it's just a hardware issue =/

if you think individual ports are to blame, just swap the ethernet cables yourself ;o

if you know which ports are good and dont wanna replace the router you can just add a small switch connected to one of the good ports.

already did, but i didn't know about the ports

i guess i'll just borrow a switcher from someone and put it in the good ports
