comments on diggApple Store Goes On Lockdown When You Try To Buy A MacBook
What would you think if this happened to you? This guy, Owen JJ Stone, says he walked into the Apple Store to get a laptop, and when he asked for a specific model, security went on lockdown. People were touching their ears, saying code words, and blocking the exits.
What would you think if this happened to you? He doesn't want to call it "racism", but he definitely feels weird about it.
We join Mr. Stone after he has just asked a male Apple store employee for a specific model Macbook:
"The girl looks at me and she says, "Oh would you like me to show it to you?" And I said, "No, I have a Macbook, I had one, I have an iMac, I know what I want. If you could just get me one, that would be great because I'm kinda in a rush, I'd appreciate that."
So, the girl looks at the guy and says "forerunner."
[...]
When she said, "forerunner," the gentleman touched his ear, and uh, then the security guard came up to the middle of the register, two people went and stood by the door, people were standing around me, and I'm like "Dude, do think I'm gonna steal this Macbook?"
And he's like, "Oh, no, no, no."
Here's the link to the video where he tells the story. He's thinking about writing a letter to Mr. Jobs. Should he? What would you do?

Ex-Apple Employee
I used to work for an Apple store. I did for quite a while. Here's the deal. Apple wants to stop people who just want to go in and buy something from shopping at Apple stores. I kid you not this is 100% serious. It was part of our Core training and it was reinforced by corporate via our district manager. Apple wants customers who are going to be able to be sold accessories, services, and Apple Care to shop at the store. When I asked about Apple fans (like I was at the time) who love Apple but know what they want I was told point blank "That's not what the Apple store is about. If you want to walk in, buy the computer, buy no services, and leave, go to Best Buy or order online. Don't shop at the Apple Store." For a while there was even the idea being floated of making the entire store by-appointment-only like the genius bar is. Seriously, they wanted to expand their "Personal Shopping" service to the entire store. They'd have 1 or 2 people on hand to handle walk-in accessory sales but anything larger than a cable or an iPod shuffle would have been met with a request to sign up for an appointment. Seriously this was the direction they intended to go; I'm sure it was scrapped (or at least toned down) because it was so ***** insane.
What they were doing in this case was one of 2 things. They either wanted to discourage the customer from returning or they wanted to get him with someone pushy to try and talk him into services and accessories.
If only they still carried the black model
