PSP games to be made "unhackable" for 60 days upon release

Today Gamasutra.com have posted an extensive interview with Sony Computer Entertainment of America's Rob Dyer, who stated that SCEA is working on implementing code to make new PSP games unhackable for up to 60 days from release.

This news comes just months after Sony's recent effort to combat PlayStation Portable piracy through online registration requirements.

    To quote:
"A lot of the stuff that will be announced at E3 we're very excited about, because they are huge titles. And we also believe that there's a way that you will be able to, not stop, but slow down the piracy in the first 30 to 60 days from a tech perspective.

There's some code that you can embed that we've been helping developers implement in order to get people at least to see a 60-day shelf life before it gets hacked and it shows up on BitTorrent.

That's been the biggest problem, no question about it. It's become a very difficult proposition to be profitable, given the piracy right now. And the fact that the category shrunk inside of retail."

Here we go again. I dunno why these idiots always think its a good idea to publicly boast about being able to trump hackers.

Hackers are an extremely resourceful bunch, and more importantly, extremely prideful. They're basically daring the hackers to prove them wrong, which they undoubtedly will.

Whatever helps get a new CFW out to prove them wrong, I'm game for. Pirating methods on PSP are out of date now for anything recent. ;/

Anyways, my guess is the game's pbb file has a unique key or something to decrypt the game for running and that the key would be unique per title, thus requiring the scene to make a per-game hack. But if that's the case, someone will likely find a way around the system entirely.

If they want to make it 'unhackable' they'd do digital-only releases, as I've yet to see anyone bother to crack those.

Tell that to the people who created the cell architecture.

That reminds me, isn't the PSP2 rumored to be built on cell architecture?

Different news story, but relevant. The CEO of Lifelock has had his identity stolen 13 times.

Apparently, when you publish your Social Security number prominently on your website and billboards, people take it as an invitation to steal your identity.
LifeLock CEO Todd Davis, whose number is displayed in the company’s ubiquitous advertisements, has by now learned that lesson. He’s been a victim of identity theft at least 13 times, according to the Phoenix New Times.
That’s 12 more times than has previously been known.

It's more the hypervisor in the PS3, which was cracked, then Sony yanked Other OS support and (effectively) nipped that in the bud.

Main point being SONY now has a track record of stopping this type of thing. I do not know how well the psp code will work , but I will trust that some games will take a few weeks to hack if they say so.

If nothing else nothing will change lol so its a "who cares really" unless sony turns out to be telling the truth.

They've had hypervisor access for months now, they just haven't updated the PS3's to remove the OtherOS. They still can't get backups to play on it.
