Okay, so as a future homeowner, I've noticed a lot of buzz about this on the news lately.

As a landlord, you cannot deny tenancy to anyone based on race, sex, family status, age or disability.

I'm pretty liberal, and all for equal rights - but am I the only one who finds this ridiculous?

1) If it's my house, and I'm paying for it - I'll damn well rent to whoever I please.

2) I'm not going to rent to anyone who looks like a slob (damage to property, infestation, etc), criminal (obvious reasons), or gang member - regardless of race. If that person happens to be a minority, what's to stop them from playing the "it's cuz I'm black, see you in court" card?

3) Wouldn't rent to obvious crackheads, even if it's "just methadone recovery". Oops, I just discriminated against the "disabled".

4) Like... again... if I'm paying $160,000-$300,000+ for the house, I don't want people in there who will fuck up my shit (walls, floors, doors, yard, etc).

5) I used to work in a photo lab a few years back. I often had to develop pictures of trashed houses/apartments/etc... some had garbage all over the floor, flies on the walls, shit on floors, trash in bathtubs, rotten food in closets, holes cut into walls, etc, etc... the customer/landlord blamed Section 8.

And so forth...

People need to fuck off.

The law is to mostly protect against scenarios like.........

You renting out your house for a young college guy, 2 months after moving in...... you find out he is gay, and decide to give him the boot because of that. Its intended to protect rentees from stuff like that.

I understand your point, but thats why there is home owners insurance, and security deposits. If you feel you need extra insurance against renters get it charge a little more monthly, and you are covered.

anyway, the principle that seems to be guiding you here is "if a system can be exploited or has problems, it's Unfair." so what if some white guy gets sued by some random "gang member-looking" black guy with track marks and loses? better that than way the fuck more black guys get denied housing because of racism. is this not obvious to you?

Don't like the person? Say you'll let them know, then wait a bit, then let them know you decided not to rent it out.

Edit2: I disagree with my first edit, that's easy to counter. Hmm...say some unknown couple is planning on renting it out and working on the paperwork at the moment, but if it doesn't work out, people are still allowed to look at it in the "off chance" the first couple doesn't work out.

If they look like scummers, say you didn't like their references or wanted a long term tenant or something. If you get a fishy feeling, check references, background checks, anything. Lie if you have to. Do whatever it takes to protect your property. My family accepted this family of scumbag Section 8'ers with good references (in PA there's this program called Section 8 that helps provide rent for people who normally wouldn't be able to afford the place). Problems the entire time they lived there, troubles evicting them, then when they left the place not only were we due rent which we were unable to collect because of section 8 complications but the cleaning costs far exceeded the security deposit put down.

Actually come to think of it everyone I've ever known who's rented to Section 8 people has had a bad experience. So IMO you should be able to discriminate all you want. Low income = no thanks. If you think you may end up with scum don't let them live there period.

They need to prove to a judge that they were discriminated against them on those issues, so that law means next to nothing unless the landlord is stupid enough to actually say that they're denied due to being a minority etc.

In your ad, don't post the monthly rent. People show up to see said rental property,that you don't want to rent to, inflate your price when they ask. Problem solved.

If you got 20 people wanting to rent, 15 of them are "unwanted". So why not do as employers do at job interviews. Pick the person you like.

I'd argue that biases against different races are mostly eliminated by human greed. It might just be me, but I'd take the tenants that I think would make me the most money. (which I would guess would solely be making payments on time and taking care of the place)

I mean, discrimination is bad... and should be regulated against...

No one should be denied a job, use of a service, etc, etc based on their race/gender etc (there are some cases where there are exceptions, but they're very rare)...

When it comes to private property, it's "bad", but should be viewed as "tough shit" - unless the landlord is getting some sort of government kickback.
