Israel attacks aid ship, kills at least 10 civilians

More than 10 people have been killed after Israeli commandos stormed a convoy of ships carrying aid to the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army says.

Armed forces boarded the largest vessel overnight, clashing with some of the 500 people on board.

It happened about 40 miles (64 km) out to sea, in international waters.

Israel says its soldiers were shot at and attacked with weapons; the activists say Israeli troops came on board shooting.

There has been widespread condemnation of the violence, while the European Union has called for an inquiry to establish what happened.

Israel's deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said his country "regrets any loss of life and did everything to avoid this outcome".

He accused the convoy of a "premeditated and outrageous provocation", describing the flotilla as an "armada of hate".

The six-ship flotilla was carrying 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid along with 600 people, all civilians, which included 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland, European legislators and an elderly Holocaust survivor, Hedy Epstein, 85.

The flotilla attacked by Israel last night was carrying materials such as cement, water purifiers, and other building materials, much of which Israel refuses to let pass into Gaza. At the end of 2009, a U.N. report found that "insufficient food and medicine is reaching Gazans, producing a further deterioration of the mental and physical health of the entire civilian population since Israel launched Operation Cast Lead against the territory," and also "blamed the blockade for continued breakdowns of the electricity and sanitation systems due to the Israeli refusal to let spare parts needed for repair get through the crossings."

Arab provocateurs are the problem. They have how many States? And there is only ONE Jewish State - surrounded by it's enemies who are bent on it's destruction. Have you read the Hamas Charter? And the Palestinians constantly refuse peace. They refused Olmert's generous offer! We withdrew from Gaza and all we got was rockets!

The problem is the radical Islamists who hate Jews and Israel. They are OUR problem because America and Israel are both Western democracies w/ shared values.

This ship was probably carrying weapons or at the very least materials to construct them. See what happens? If the Arabs and their 'liberal' supporters would just let Israel handle the aid from the existing land crossings, none of this would happen.

I really can't believe this stance from Israel:

Israel said the boats were embarking on "an act of provocation" against the Israeli military, rather than providing aid, and that it had issued warrants to prohibit their entrance to Gaza.

It asserted that the flotilla would be breaking international law by landing in Gaza, a claim the organisers rejected.

The interesting thing is, at this point, it doesn't even matter if the civilians were violent or not. They were people delivering aid to a hunger and poverty ridden country, and Israeli IDF killed some of them. They will never be able to sucessfully spin this.

IDF confirmed they besegied the sivilian ships in INTERNATIONAL WATERS. Illegal as only flagnations are allowed to do this.

Their "they were carrying guns!" card will never work this time around (I don't think they'll even attempt to pull it), both ports (Istanbul, Sirkeci, Antalya and Southern Cyprus) are at EU-standards, tightly controlled and you cannot even carry a pair of scissors if you aren't supposed to and if you don't have proper documentation. Everything is checked throughly via x-ray and documentation was sent to Israel in advance.

Ships were carrying nothing but food, medicine and dialysis equipment. Incident happened in International waters and this is worse than Somalian piracy to be honest.

In addition to all this they are STILL filtering the information going out. How many people are injured? What are their identities? We've got none of these so far.

Civilians in the ship were mostly 50-60 years old( and there was a nobel winner 86 year old). Some of them tried to defend themselves with water hoses.

As they get more lonely in the region they get more aggressive. Hopefully we'll be able to create a massive shitstorm out of these, but whenever EU raises its voice they are getting blamed for anti-semitism because of the obvious past.

I've just seen the Taksim area, holy shit there is a huge protest out there. Good fucking game @ Israel for ruining relations with their only ally in the region. We still have no problem with their citizens, we've got a lot of Jewish people living in the country and we are still their most popular tourist destination but no Turkish government (especially when you consider the massive rise of left/liberal movement in the country) can ever dare making a deal with Israel anymore until they decide to get rid of their current, aggressive government. There is a huge public reaction here.
