How much pain can a man endure?

When I had a kidney stone years ago, I was thrashing around on the hospital bed with tears streaming out of my eyes as they hurriedly injected me with some morphine. If I didn't have access to painkillers would I have passed out or went into shock or something? Or would I have just suffered intensely?

I ask because I've been having some excruciating tooth pain lately in multiple teeth. Ny friend said he felt like he was going to go insane while he waited to get his root canal. It feels like I'm being stabbed in the teeth and I imagine it will only get worse. I have access to painkillers, I'm just curious how much I would be able to handle and what the consequences would be. Would I be driven to madness and attempt to rip my own teeth out, knowing full well the nerve damage that could result?

Oh man Kidney Stone pain. That's some fun pain right there. I can best describe it in two parts. The first part is the dull ache that prevents you from staying still. Walking around doesn't help, but it feels like it does. The second part are the spikes. On the really big ones, you can feel them coming. It's like going up a hill on a roller coaster. You know it's gonna happen, and you can't do a damn thing to stop it.

And surprisingly enough, pissing them out isn't the painful part. That's easy. The painful part is when they are traveling from your kidney to your bladder.

As for an answer to your op question, it depends on the person since plenty of people can tolerate insane amounts of suffering, especially those used to having it more often.

How much you focus on it, relates greatly to its ability to win. When I am in pain (and I am daily) I have to not think about it because focusing on it actually amplifies it, if I am not constructively thinking about it in a way that represents its elimination from my senses.

For some, pain is used as a vehicle of transcendence to" higher states of being" or utter peace. However, having the choice, the power over when that pain starts and ends, does give the person greater control over the implementation of those higher states of being.

This choice, purely based on the fact that it is a choice, can make it a completely different experience than experiencing pain without a choice.
One's perspective of the pain relates greatly to how that person can tolerate it.

I admire your resilience. Perhaps you should try some relaxed breathing with sensory deprivation or something close to that. I know when I have toothache, noise is the worst, then temperature and textures.

Relaxed breathing with some form of counting down or visualization can help.

Visualization can be anything depending on how your mind processes thought. If you are a visual person, imagining the removal of pain in separate parts as you count in rhythm with your breathing can help to isolate and break concentration on pain.

Some people like thinking of things that are relaxing to them or distracting but pleasant.

Sensory deprivation in a non-clinical sense, is putting yourself in quiet (or like I do, I need background noise to relax. Silence lets me hear my internal functions which bothers me so I put a fan on or undecipherable music.)

Removal of light and textures and a comfortable quiet place.
