I got an email from SE about FFXIV this morning...

I was a hardcore FFXI player for years, and I was one of those people that reserved the special edition of FFXIV when it came out. I played it for a few months and tried my hardest to enjoy it. Eventually, I realized there was just nothing there to enjoy and I gave up. I think it was in January or February. I begrudgingly left because I didn't feel this title had anything to do with the FF franchise, and my fanboy powers weren't enough to make me enjoy it.

Today, I got a "we want to win you back" email from SE. I haven't thought about this game in nearly a year, and I was actually surprised it's still being worked on. This email is jam packed with stuff telling me how much better the game is now.

Is it really? I last played before the big disaster in Japan caused the servers to go offline and all that. I think I got a DoW class to like rank 40 or something, a craft around r40 (I think blacksmith?) and physical level 50. EDIT: Oh cool, I have a signature. Guess I was pretty close.

Is this game really to the point that there's more to do than the same leves over and over or are they just desperately trying to win back people like me?

there is more to do than leves. it is still free so it doesnt cost you a thing to see if you like the changes or not.

Not at all. Just give SE a call and they can remove it for you. I had to do the same. They can either cancel entirely or suspend it temporarily in case it turns up.

As long as you can give them some details (reg codes and a couple security questions as far as i can recall) it should only take you a few mins on the phone its pretty straightforward .

Yeah the game still isn't amazing, but it's had some very solid all around improvements. There is some fun to be had and you can feel the potential. Also if you're curious who's in charge, read Naoki Yoshida's producer letter on the main site. I gotta admit, everything this guy says is awesome imo.

If you're low level there isn't much to do beside leve... I know they added a new dungeon for low level but I have yet to see anyone start doing those and looking for people.

Or you could just wait for 2.0 where you can start fresh on a new server away from the diehards that have all jobs at 50 with maxed gil/crafts/retainer spots and relics and their other doodads.

YEah, there's no way I'm going to play on one of the old servers, theyre fucked from the start. The only problem i foresee of the new servers is that there are going to be manthra EVERYWHERE.

I actually just decided to give this a try today myself. I'm probably gonna start fresh on a new server when 2.0 comes out, but I wanted to check it out in the meantime. Games only 20 bucks and I have a free month to try it for.

Unless they lock server transfers for over a year or just don't add such a completely reasonable feature that every other MMO has this will be unavoidable. I remember making a crapload of gil on crafting classes just leveling them up and that was ~8months into the release on my first character.

Even an old player wanting to start new with some knowledge of how crafting played out on other servers would be at a huge advantage; it would be similar to Asura/Hades in the early days.

I don't think they would need to lock server transfers for a year for everyone, but they could restrict where old players could transfer to for a determined amount of time. Is there some reason this wouldn't work?
