    Novice PC Question

Ok, I have been a console gamer all my life, so unfortunately I am not computer-savvy at all. Recently I broke down and bought a new PC due to FFXIV being released earlier on the PC.

I just want to ask the simple question of, will FFXIV run decently on what I have, or do I need to upgrade? I appreciate any feedback, and know that I am on a thrifty budget lol. Thanks in advance.

    What I have:

    Intel(r) Dual CPU E2220 @ 2.40GHz

    Ram 4 GGB DDr2

    32 bit operating system

    x2 ATI Radeon HD 3450

HD sound card, blah blah 1280 x 1024 resolution atm

think thats all the important stuff lol

You will definitely need a couple upgrade to run the game. Have you tried running the benchmark? I'm not sure that graphics card will get even over 1k on low.
You might be able to upgrade the graphics card and run the game on the lowest settings, but you also may require a new CPU to remove some bottleneck as a lot of the processing at the low end is CPU.

Is this a new machine, or just new to you? Most of it is a bit out of date.

With the CPU that's in there, you've got a dated platform in general. It's a socket 775 model, and it was positioned at the "value" end of the spectrum...at the time of its availability it was maybe a model or two up from being the absolute cheapest mainstream desktop CPU Intel made.

The bigger issue, however, is the video setup. A 3450 is not really a suitable gaming card for most games made in the past 5-7+ years. Two of them won't be much better.

One of the important aspects of the system, which you didn't list, is the power supply. Chances are it's underpowered for putting in a better video card.

IMO, bare minimum you need to look at upgrading the GPU, and in turn probably the PSU to support it. Maybe look at something like a Radeon 5770 ($150-160 for a 1GB) or a GTX 460 ($220 or so for a 1GB). Something like a Radeon 4850 would be maybe around $100 and still a huge improvement over what you have though.

Perhaps finding a used E8400 CPU (as they cost $170 new still) would also help. The better Core2 Duo CPUs are still pretty comparable to most of the lower end CPUs (i3s, dual core i5s).
Alternatively, you could probably buy an AMD board + CPU and reuse your (presumably) DDR2 800Mhz RAM in it.

Your comp will run it. Will it run it at the highest settings no.

IMO a graphic card and some overclocking will give you a nice jump.

If someone so kind would explain overclocking, so that I could do that, that would be awesome. I have never done any of this before, so excuse my ignorance. Thanks in advance

Overclocking wont help much in your situation.

Refer to this chart to see how lowly your cpu sits:
