N64 and Onkyo receiver

Trying to connect my N64 to the Onkyo 706 we have in the living room. From what I'm told, I should be able to just plug it straight into the AUX port and turn it on, but I'm not getting video or sound. TV's connected via HDMI, nothing else is connected through AUX, though I have no idea what my roommate has the settings configured to. If there's a way to disable certain inputs, or Composite in general he very well may have done it.

I'm fairly sure that this will never work, unless your receiver can connect to the television by other means. A simple generic Googling -- not mentioning that it's an Onkyo, but that you're using an N64 and aren't getting video and/or sound while hooking it up through a receiver -- has revealed other people fiddling, buying things, and generally doing this and that, but ultimately being unable to get it to work. I'd wager this is due to HDMI being digital and the N64's inability to transmit such a signal. By the way, the only people who remedied it connected their receiver to their television with either a standard yellow RCA or an S-Video cable and used that when trying to play N64 throughput. For them, that worked.

If your television can't accept anything but digital input, you just might be fucked.

Strange. Manual for the receiver specifically says that it will upconvert the signal to HDMI if that's what the TV's connected as. I'll try it by connecting the TV via composite or S-Video and see if it works. Thanks.

Ive got an onkyo 608 just tested out my N64 with it and it worked fine(well as fine as my n64 ever works lol) When plugged in threw the back but didn't work in AuX for some reason for me either just gave me a blue screen. Plugged it in in cbl/sat rca on the back but that shouldent matter any should work you just need to go into the settings and assign it correctly to the function you want to switch to it with on the remote/box.

Easy way to tell if you got it hooked up and working with the receiver is if it comes up with a black screen when you turn the n64 on or the game comes up. With my N64 anyway always had the issue where you gotta blow in it a few times to actually get the game to work.

That seems to indicate to me that it can pass most everything to HDMI - though it's also about audio capability only, so short of recording or going to an amp, it's a moot point. The sound should still be coming out of the speakers hooked up to the receiver.

The issue other folks might have is that some receivers (though fewer now) act as HDMI switchers only, at least for video. Better receivers can and do upconvert analog sources and output them over HDMI. My Denon does. Seems like his Onkyo should as well.

Might be that said conversion needs to be enabled though. I also recall my N64 being fussy - may need to try another input or something.

Thanks for the help, I know I tried plugging it into the VCR inputs on my receiver and it gave me the same issue, I'll try again and see if I didn't miss something in the settings. If all else fails I can plug directly into the TV but then I don't get to play OoT in SURROUND SOUND!

Got it working, it's the N64 that's being finicky. Had fewer problems hooking up my NES
