Back in January, we got wind that NBC was planning to roll out a new super-hero show called THE CAPE. At that time, all we knew was that it’d be about “a former cop framed for a crime who becomes a masked hero to clear his name and reunite with his son.” Now, the Peacock’s offered a preview of its 2010-2011 schedule and, lo and behold, there’s a trailer and a preview clip for the show, which will make a midseason debut. From the looks of it, the frame-up that puts this “former cop”, Vince Farraday, into his life of adventure is perpetrated by a super-rich, super-psycho serial killer named Chess. While presumed dead, Farraday falls in with a bank-robbing circus whose ringmaster teaches him a variety of magic-styled crime fighting skills, including the ability to use a cape as a weapon. I’ll give this show’s creators credit… I’ve seen superheroes use swords, shields, bows and arrows, chains, hammers and pretty much everything else you can imagine as their signature weapons. I’ve never once seen a hero whose gimmick was his cape.
The actors playing the Cape(David Lyons) and Chess (James Frain) are from ER and THE TUDORS, respectively, but genre fans will probably be more excited about a couple actors’ inclusion in the supporting cast. Summer Glau, she of FIREFLY and the SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, stars as a muckraking blogger who aides the Cape’s effort to route out corruption in the city. Keith David, who’s acted in PITCH BLACK and voiced SPAWN (among many other things), stars as the criminal ringmaster who mentors the Cape.
