Get android/iphone and tether it, easiest way without paying out the ass for a broadband card

This would be your best option. For example, with T-Mobile, you could buy any Android -- pay for an unlimited data plan 3G/4G for $30-35 a month, and use it strictly for tethering. That is, where you'd have signal.

I did some research on the iphone route. It's mostly free beside buying the iphone and the app?

Yes, and I think if you root the phone (which is very easy to do these days) you don't have to buy an app

Take care if you go the iPhone route, I don't think AT&T offers unlimited data plans except for those customers who already owned a 3G/3GS. You could end up paying a lot more than a regular ISP would charge you.

    Correct.

AT&T and Sprint both no longer have unlimited data plans unless you have a current one with them from the past. T-Mobile and Verizon are the only two wireless carriers that offer unlimited data plans for phones.

I'm currently on Sprint, so what's the best action to take?

What kind of usage are we talking about? Are you just going to be using it to casually surf an hour each day or more heavy usage? If it's casual you could probably tether and just keep track of your data usage to make sure you don't go over. If it's heavy usage, you might just be SoL unless you want to pay for a broadband card or something like that.

Mainly 1-2 hrs a day possibly 5-6 if it's a slow day. I have an unlimited internet plan right now on Sprint.

If you have an unlimited plan, an Android device or iPhone would work perfectly for you. In 3G coverage areas, you'll get 1-2/mbps in 4G 4-5/mbps.
