Where to start on PC languages?

I have been out of the computer field for years now (5-6 years). Due to working in fields that have no use of technology degrees.

Now I'm looking to get back into computer networking, and actually use a degree I've had for years.

I'm just wondering where I should start refreshing on PC languages or learning them. The only language I really remember is C++, but looking to refresh on Java and learn objective C at some point. Is there any others I should focus on?

    Thanks.

What PC languages are in demand now, or just generally good to know besides C++, java and objective C

    • C/C++ - Is always good to know for general knowledge.
    • Java - Is mostly used in governments, Android phones and Minecraft.
    • PHP - Amateur web sites like BG.
    • C# - Mostly used in governments and Xboxes.
    • Objective C - Used to be only used by Apple zealots but now is mostly known for iPhones.

So depending on these contexts pick whatever sounds the coolest to you. Also I know my contexts are biased as fuck.

Depends what field youre going in.
Ive used DOS/Batch, VBScript, and Unix Shells more than anything else.

    This.

Don't spend time learning a language if you are going to use it minimally. If you're going into networking, start with VB.net & basic Windows DOS programs. Then eventually move up to something more complex such as C++/Java.

What are your interest? Are you doing this for fun or money?
.net is a good to learn, I guess. I use c#.net for a lot of the business I do. .net kind of fills a niche market though, but I guess that could be said about a almost all languages. Java is good to learn, but eh. C++ is good to learn... but eh.. lol

I mostly stick to httpwebrequest/response kind of stuff. I think you need to give a bit more information as to what specifically you're looking to write as far as software goes. "What languages to learn" or "Where to start" is going to get you almost every programming language in the book.

My suggestion? Learn Assembly. Everything gets a whole lot easier after that mess.
