Announcement for Square Enix Account Users (2/16/2011)

As a measure to help prevent unauthorized access to Square Enix accounts, we will be introducing a system to restrict logins when suspicious account access is detected.

This system will be implemented for FINAL FANTASY XIV during the maintenance on on February 21st, 2011, with implementation for PlayOnline and FINAL FANTASY XI following shortly thereafter. Details on the maintenance will be announced at a later time.

Customers with accounts for FINAL FANTASY XIV and FINAL FANTASY XI linked to the same Square Enix account will have access to both games restricted and receive a “Unauthorized connection to server detected” message when trying to access PlayOnline in the event that their FINAL FANTASY XIV login is restricted. Square Enix accounts that use security tokens, however, will never have their logins restricted.

Under this new system, once login has been restricted, an email notification will be sent to the primary email address registered to the Square Enix Account. This email will contain instructions on how to remove the login restriction. Players will be asked to reset their passwords and log in again.

If you are unable to receive the email instructions for removing the login restriction, you will be unable to log in to your account, so please make sure that you have registered a valid email address by February 21st, 2011.

If you have any questions about how to remove login restrictions, or have accidentally deleted the email instructions, and are unable to resolve the situation on your own, please refer to the link below.

We cannot guarantee that these security measures will be enough to completely eliminate unauthorized access to accounts, and we ask for your cooperation in protecting your personal information, and in taking appropriate security precautions when using your account.

better make sure your email assigned to your account isn't some bullshit one you forgot about the last 2 years this crap came out -_- I know I did and I just changed it.

Hope it doesn't mean by "unusual" IP addresses, or it's gonna mess up my Dualboxing a bit.

Hope this isn't region specific either <_<. I still share my old account when I need some TH with a guy who lives in the UK, and for that matter, I hope this doesn't lock him out of it.

This, my LS members just recently shared both their accounts with me, and dual / triple boxing a THF, WHM and NIN is pretty damn nice... helped with my kannagi quiet a bit last night for only 6 hours of farming to get 18 helms with a good hour or two AFK in between that somewhere.

I could be wrong, but the way I'm reading this is "If we close your account, we're gonna close it at the SE account level rather than the POL account level". They seem to give more details about that part of the process than any new security conditions.

if you go into your account info your able to setup 2 email addresses onto the account, I assume this means the first email address assigned to the account.

Im not really understanding this, if you do not have a squareenix account/token does this even apply to you? or is this strictly for token users with SE accounts.

It's for people linked to an SE account but without a token. They're trying to get more people to get tokens from the looks of it.

Well logging into the SE account site made me select my Continent/Country for my account, I don't know if it's new or not, haven't logged into it for a while, just wanted to make sure my email address was right.

Once a login restriction is placed, it can only be removed by the account owner. The Square Enix Information Center cannot remove login restrictions on behalf of users.
Thank god. I was stressing until I read that. If this involved their customer reps at any level I think I'd cry.

I just hope it's not going to require a bunch of retarded information not everyone has anymore if your account does end up restricted. (PoL codes for instance.)

Accounts can become restricted when "suspicious account access" is detected. What is suspicious account access? I suspect that SE intentionally avoided clarifying this, because the information would be useful to hackers.

"Suspicious account access" probably encompasses multiple things and is wide open to evolve over time (remember, SE accounts are not limited to FF11, SE wants this account system to grow for future games and even to support currently horribly failing games like FF14).

I wonder if multiple failed login attempts can trigger suspicious account access. Another possibility would be dramatic IP changes (such as from USA to China).

So is it possible to cancel Square Enix accounts yet? Or do you still lose your POL account with it?

So, kind of random problem with that. My friend's security token never arrived. He lives in Taiwan and he ordered it to my address because they wouldn't ship to him, but it never showed up because SE sucks cawks. Anyway, we eventually just connected him to my SE account and deactivated the token so we could both have a bag and log in. He has since stopped playing and I reactivated his account (with permission) to use as a mule.

Now when I try to log into the SE account management system to see what my primary e-mail associated with the account is, it's telling me I have to associate a nationality with my account in order to continue using it. This is kind of bullshit, for two reasons:
    1) If I tell it the US and he logs in from Taiwan, there's a good chance both of us will get locked out and screwed.
    2) I use him as a mule and pay for the account but told him he can play whenever he wants. He hasn't logged in yet, but I don't want to take that option away from him.

Well i have an EU account while playing in america atm, im not too familiar with how token accounts work, but i did have an SE account, so i was worried about loseing my character while im playing in america, so just to be safe i cancled my SE account, as it wasnt linked to the pol ID. but yes, canceling the SE ID will remove you from POL services if your ID is linked to your playonline account. Clever SE.
